There's clearly an amount of effort put into this game but the characters just look so boring. It's just a self-insert MC and his le wacky friends with ugly noses. When you make everything wacky, nothing is actually unique or surprising.
I do like where they're taking the combat however since it's based on reflexes, I hope the speed of comat scales well with the progression of the game. I also like how each character has a special attack consisting of quick minigames.

The game is shaping up well. It looks interesting, from a narrative and world-building perspective.
I am cautiously interested.
The "stylistic choice", however, is somewhat controversial and, as you can see, and will deter people from playing it. I, personally, don't feel drawn to it at all.
And it is quite pointless to compare it to Undertale. No, It is nowhere close to it, but the author will need to make a statement for himself with the game, especially considering the incoming wave of indie Earthbound-inspired games (Omori, YIIK, etc).
