I do think it's cute, but it doesn't instantly make me think of its type like other starters have done. I think this generic design style has been more common in the starters since gen 6. Even then gen 5 managed to throw us a bone or two, giving us a decent enough story and even a hard mode, as well as a way to play directly with our brothers and sistersor kids, in some people's caseand help them out in their game by giving them bonuses and items for free.
Sure it isn't as hard as the games you started with, and that's why you dislike them so much, but when you look at it, every generation's tried something different, something more interesting, and something to keep people playing.
They even change shit up to keep metafags happy, like the physical/special split or a balance for dragon type's defensive domination mixed with its stupid stat distribution.
Granted, Fairy still needs some work, but it's getting there.
