I am currently on a journey to play every current canon touhou game. Not complete, play. I am not good at shooting games nor do I care for them in the first place.
That said
Gameplay: Good. The better you are at it the more you realize how good it is. Later games tend to have better difficulty curves, too, so you can learn how to do things properly.
Music: Spectacular. ZUN is actually a genius. I don't need to talk about this much.
Characters/Story: While the story is often silly, and the characters are often silly, it's all undoubtedly entertaining. Almost everything you see in fan works comes from the mainline games. Almost, some fans like to be a bit wild in their interpretations.
Mythos: Gensoukyou is a crazy place. It's a breeding ground for wild imaginations.
ZUN: The creator of the series commands a lot of respect that is fully deserved. If you ever play the games, make sure to read his afterwords. He's modest and easy spirited with a lot of interesting ideas and a very accommodating outlook. Seems void of greed.
These are my impressions based on the last game I saw through (Ten Desires). If you're like me and shit at shooting games, watch playthroughs. You'll eventually start to understand danmaku.
