I have no idea, but a lot of speedrunners themselves are a bit insane, so it might be autism.
I mean, sure it's interesting to watch someone glitch their way through a game in various interesting ways, but when you think about it - speedrunners are fucking mental cases.

nice anecdote,but there are hundreds, likely thousands of examples that refute your point.
Take 500 subjects with cancer, and randomly assign 250 to herbal treatment. The other 250 to chemo. Check out those sick proportions of cured cancer following the study.
