Patents only apply to America anyway unless you go through the arduous process of applying for that same patent in EVERY country you plan to sell your product in which pretty much nobody does. All corporations only settle for patenting in the US Patent Office and give 0 fucks about patenting anywhere else, so technically you can ignore patents all you like as long as you're not doing business in Murrika. Whether that would actually be more profitable though than coming into financial agreement with the patent holder would remain to be seen.
Also Carmack's Reverse is not the same as the technique used by Creative Labs though it is very similar, similar enough that you could take the case to court and lose due to Judge's ignorance.

It's still based on worked done by other people, just like the fast inverse square root function in Quake 3 and BSP culling method for the original Doom. Carmack has contributed very little to the industry and the things he has (megatextures) have been done faster, better and with higher quality than he was capable of producing.
Carmack is a meme programmer that is only remembered because he was part of a team for a popular game. When compared to his peers, such as those working at Looking Glass, his work is amateur at best.

Bullshit. He has a long proven history of taking other peoples work and putting it in his engines. He also spent a lot of time around the offices of hardware manufacturers looking at improvements in their work, so it's very likely he "discovered it on his own" during that time too. He knew about it and he stole it, simple as that.
As for megatextures, they're not the future, they are present day tech. However, Carmack's version is fucking garbage. When developers like Splash Damage can do the work better and without the consistent problems that Carmack's version has even to this day, you know that he's really not as competent as people make him out to be.

You can be angry at someone all you want, but the guy made something and the consumers resoundingly said "yes" to it. The cost of shipping physical copies of games to retailers is tremendous, and smaller devs had no real chance.
If nothing else, I can say gabe newell has at least cut down on the amount of gasoline needed to bring a product from the producer to the consumer (transporting pallets of the physical games, then the consumers having to drive to stores to acquire them).

What exactly has Gabe Newall contributed? He had a great idea for an internet retail storefront for PC games but really that was it. He got all the code for GoldSource and the Source expansion from John Carmack. He financed expansion of Steam with investments from his time as an executive at Microsoft. He's just a typical businessman who hasn't really done much to propel the market forward other than make gamers accept the most draconian form of DRM the world has ever seen.
You could really pick anyone to be honest. John Carmack (invented 100% of all modern 3D rendering techniques we use today), Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario is better known than Jesus & Mickey Mouse), Sid Meier (founding father of gaymen with shit like Colonization.Alpha Centauri/etc), Will Wright (gigantic asshole who created the Sim asshole and drove his company into the ground with crappy games until Virgin sold it to EA), Hironobu Sakaguchi (pretty much 100% of everything that ever was Squaresoft from inception), Hideo Kojima (started the trend of failed filmmakers turning games into cutscenes with terrible plots and D-grade dialogue), Ralph Baer (guy who invented videogames), Richard Garriott (ULTIMA & the entire MMO genre), Peter Molyneux (founding father of gaymen with Populus and Dungeon Keeper who latter became the standard for lying to consumers)
