Every third person game from 1998 on has built on the mechanics OoT brought to be. It's not mediocre, it's a progenitor. It's still well executed for what it attempts to do. It's only real sin is not trying to do very much by today's standards.

I'd argue too many games now attempt to do far too much and that's every bit as much a sin.

I can imagine OoT being less than impressive if you first played it in 2016. It might seem mediocre, rudimentary even, but it's also one of those games that established standards in the first place. Quite frankly I'm surprised at how sound I still find its design over 15 years after my first playthrough. Games have definitely gotten bigger and more complex but I think OoT's foundational design is still better than most modern games. It just does so much with what it has while making very few missteps, like my list of sincere negatives for the game is very, very small.

I agree with that. The main issue here is that there are those who believe that the game holds up by today's standards only because they won't take of their nostalgia goggles.

For example, I played Banjo-Tooie around the time it was released and I thought it was great then. Playing it as an adult is unbearable, the N64 cannot handle this game, half of the game slows down to a crawl when too much is on the screen.

As a whole I think I agree. But broken down OoT still does things better than some modern games. The best example would be its lock on camera logic. I play DS3, a game that came out 18 years after OoT, and have more issues with the camera than a game that can now buy porn and cigarettes legally.

When a game's biggest crimes are there not being enough of it, spreading it a bit thin/short, and it being a bit easy, I struggle to really call it bad by any stretch.
