Besides, you'd have to be a memer to say that FFX is all linear paths. Sure, the exceptions were often "big ass empty open area" (calm lands, al bhed desert), but there were some nice areas with actual exploration (Bevelle, Zanarkand ruins, any cloister of trials section, that forest I forget the name of because it's been years, and that one place where you get Anima, just to name a few.

Second level: Video games have been use of visual illusions to make the game seem bigger than it actually is since the dawn of 3D graphics. Half of every game is visual stimulation. Smoke and mirrors is a large part of what makes games different.
So yes. Adding illusionary tricks to hallways to pretend the game isn't a hallway makes it ok.

This. Tidus is actually a great main character. He just has a lot of nasally lines. There was some interview with the voice actor where he said he tried to make his voice for Tidus sound younger by speaking at a higher pitch, but when asked if he would change anything about his performance given the opportunity, he said that he would have liked to go back and voice more of Tidus' lines deeper like they were in other parts of the game.
FFX has great gameplay, and the sphere grid is cool.
The problem is everything else. The character designs and voices are atrocious. The story is even more ridiculous than the other FFs. The characters are horribly written.

It wasn't a good game. It wasn't a deep game. But I kept going back to it time and time again. It was something to do when I had down time. Boot up the game, kick the AI teams up and down the field for fun, score some goals, save and quit. it was a pain to enable cheats on FF7. You had to sync to the square enix cloud (good luck) and then log into your SE account from their site and go to your cloud saves and edit which file you want to cheat on it. It is overall a pain in my opinion. As for FF8 and the others... dont know.
