The previous Empress (Jessamine?) Was really, *really* well-liked. I think Emily would be beloved enough as the Empress' only heir, even if she is a bastard.
But that's assuming *everyone* knows she's Corvo's daughter. It might be something only the elite (Havelock, Lord Pendleton, etc.) know because they're in the loop. It's very possible the Empress was married to some guy who died, and she claimed he was Emily's father, and everybody but those who actually know the Empress believe it.
Or, that could just be a plot point relevant to how she gets kicked off the throne at the start of Dishonored 2

Rat swarm is boring as fuck, all you do it pop a swarm and it eats people. It can distract or it can disrupt attackers but that's all it can do. Possession is worse as you can barely do anything while possessing, and you move slow as molasses. All the other active powers had much more depth to them, except for maybe Detective Vision.

I did many more non lethal runs than lethal so I didn't use Rat Sworm so much. But Possession was indeed boring. Being able to attack may be too OP, but maybe being able to shove others would make the power more interesting. But for the Rats, maybe be able to not summon them but recruit rats as you explore that you could spend mana to manually sic or distract.

I was pleasantly surprised by the first Dishonored, but I think the biggest problem was that the player was way too powerful. The game was a cake-walk with all of your abilities unlocked.
Seems like in order to make the sequel better they would need to de-power the protag, which is the opposite of how sequels usually work.
