Nah. Carmack has always been a excellent programmer with a thorough knowledge of both hardware and software and how to push them to their limits.

None of that implies "knows how to make a fun video game." Frankly, trying to make the Occulus and it's software run efficiently is exactly the kind of job he needs. It's all tech, no "fun." And on the weekends he can still work on his amateur space program.

Doom had a fucking great background, else it could just be another tank commander clone with better graphics if it were for Carmack. Duke Nukem 3D is a cult game essentially because of the background in which the game was nested in.

I was under the impression that Tim Sweeney has more than once namedropped Carmack as one of the best programmers in the industry and a source of inspiration. Both are AIAS hall of fame members, but only Carmack has a BAFTA
