This happened to my friend with his GBC back in 3rd grade. It was this nosy little fat black chick that ratted him out. He didn't even take it out during class or anything, just played it on the bus to and back from school, same as like 10 other kids from the same class. We'd all trade/battle them Pokémon on the way there, or at least hope those damn link cables would work.
What was even funnier was when his dad came in the next day, screamed at the teacher and threatened to press charges for theft if she ever witheld his property ever again. Pretty sure that's why she quit half way through that year.
