Pike and Shot Campaigns, Unity of Command, and Panzer corp (the grand campaign) is pretty good. The games are niche so they are expensive, so I would recommend pirating or waiting for a rare sale for them. The grand Campaign is pretty cool in that you build an army over the whole 39-45 war with a few somewhat ahistorical scenarios like assualting dunkirk or breaking through at Kursk.

Panzer Corps has something ridiculous like 500 units and a lot of them are tanks from different nations and different periods of the war.
I just don't enjoy playing them. I spend my time looking at a map and doing fuckall except looking at minimaps and menus. Then you have to get into the slow as fuck gameplay and learn how to play it which takes a fucking while since they usually have a shit ton of options which sounds cool but it's really overwhelming to someone that's just starting. And that's it really, I can't be assed to spend time learning a videogame from scratch like I did when I was a kid.

4X and Grands fail for me, because I feel like once you've learned how to play one, you played them all. Tweaks and flavour changes, but once you understand inner mechanics the game instantly turns into dull shit. To a certain degree this is fair to all genres, but things like RPGs and Action games also provide stronger context, like stories, level designs, dialogies, RTS strategies provide dynamic change in situation, turn-based strategies have none of it
