I'd say he's a good guy. I don't know what would make you think otherwise, besides the fact that he technically resurrects in hell (Deimos is in hell), but even then I think saving humanity and killing all of hell would redeem himself.

As far as new designs go, I think they're doing fine. Getting non-stereotypical demons right can be hard because it's easy to make them look more alien (like you said), but the new designs like the archvile look great.
I don't think DG would really interact with Mario of Pac-Man, but I can see him getting along with MC well enough. Even though they can't talk (or at least not DG), they have quite a bit in common; maybe they can play some Quake together or something.
