Civilization games have been on a long downward decline ever since Civ 2. There have been cool features added in other installments. Strategic and luxury resources from 3 and 4 were good. But on average, the gameplay has gotten worse.

The name of the game is Civilization. The goal of the game should be to build cities, that's what civilization means. Thus, the game should reward you for building cities. More cities means more population, it means more troops, it means more GDP, more art, etc.

Civ 2 rewarded you for building cities. It was important that you build the cities in the right spot, and it was important that you develop the city properly, but if you do that right, it just rewarded you even further. Or, if you didn't want to rush settlers, you could conquer your enemies and after things stabilized that only made your own civilization all the more powerful. Painting the map was FUN.

Somewhere along the line they lost sight of that. Now the game effectively punishes you for building more cities. It fucks up your happiness, your economy, your research, your production.

I think that a common complaint from players in all Civ games is that people get tired of micromanagement in the late game. So the solution that devs came up with was to punish you for building too many cities. That means less micromanagement. I guess that was easier than coming up with better AI to automatically micromanage your cities.

>not 12 year old anime loving neets

Im 26 and anime loving, but I dont like this bullshit, phone-level graphics.

But it was V that punished people for going wide empires. IV was still about making as much cities as possible. Only that they made placement more important and prevented ICS from happening.

According to dev interviews happiness will be local not global for civ 6, also apparently geography will affect research rate so being costal could speed up nautical tech research. What this means is wide could be viable again, not that it wasn't viable in V.
>>
>>337358347

Yes.

I want to feel like guide to the nation, leading them across the history. That feeling is combined with classic board game approach, to make it even possible without forcing players to play for months.

Previous Civ games could give me that.

>>
>>337358347
The tone of the game is centred around the fact that it's about the entire span of human civilization. It features abstraction and boardgame mechanics but generally the aesthetics of the game have been in line with that. That's not to say that the game's were never light-hearted or didn't have any humour but there is very clear gulf in presentation compared to the promotional material, or the previous game. Imagine if SMAC had used these kind of visuals, it would feel completely off.

It's building upon the content already in Civ V after all DLC plus the new changes like unstacked cities, better terrain, stacking support units into regular military units, dyamic research, a coastal city will research fighing and shit fast than one in the middle of a continent as an example.

Game is gonna be great m8, already got it preordered.
>>
>>337344126

>>
Anyone saying the artstyle is fine is the same kind of memelord who though Spooky's House of Jumpscares was genuinely terrifying.
>>
The thing with Civ games is that casuals actually eat that stuff up. In fact, any sim genre tends to hit big with the casual market. The more they simplify the inputs and the more devices they get their game on, the bigger the market truly is.

I have in-laws that do nothing but play Simcity and Farmville but used to be straight up addicted to the older Civilization games. If they can get a full experience of Civ on their phones, they'll definitely be hooked into it. Revolution was a nice start, but it lacks a lot of depth and the games are actually too short.

Nobody is bothered just because it's stylized. What people are angry about is that it's stylized as a mobile game.

If someone removed the hex outlines and told you it's the newest Clash of Clans clone, would you honestly have reason to doubt it?
>>
>>337359181
To some extent yes it works. The AI is extremely dumb about peace treaties and you can get cities or shit tons resources for no good reason. I once ended part of a three front war right as one of the AI's was all over one of my cities and got two luxuries out of it. Another gave me a white peace a few turns later even though I was still outnumbered and then the last was easy to deal with.

It's not a boogeyman when series go there to die.

Previously, that graveyard-ghetto was handheld (see Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Shin Megami Tensei, Legend of Zelda, Megaman, the list goes on).

Hell, if I want to paint with broad strokes, you can even say entire genres went to handheld to die. Tactical RPGs, dungeon crawlers, and puzzle games are all genres that PC/console ignored and inevitably niche'd out to the handheld ghetto.

I don't mind stylized but this looks so...cheap. Looks fine to me, the gameplay is already highly abstracted so I don't mind the visual style being simplified in some areas if it makes it easier to acquire information. Good UI design makes a much bigger difference than how noisy the texture of a grassland is. Perhaps if the visual style of the previous games was tied closer to the gameplay I would be bothered about the change but it never felt like it was, particularly so with V.

The important things about the game are how much/little it improves upon V and whether it compromises on depth in order to get an eventual mobile port out of it.

Still going to pirate it, wouldn't want to waste my money if it turns out to be a turd like Beyond Earth.
>>
This must mean that the game doesn't take as long to start/load up as V and the maps are going to be bigger.

It's pretty expensive for an expansion pack that downgrades the graphics.

Let's hope they reveal something new about it at E3 since these minor tweaks are something you would see in an expansion for V and do not justify a full price.

I fucking am. Hexes and 1UPT are cancer.
"Unrolling the city" is just as bad as Civ5's "unrolling the military," to use Ed Beach's own words. It requires an excellent tactical AI.

Given how Jewish Firaxis has become with DLC, I have absolutely no faith that they're going to spend time to make an AI good enough for this game. They'll cut corners just like they have since 5.
>>
>>337368726
Wasn't Babylon a DLC civ? They're overpowered
>>
>>337368789
I don't know about that. The districts will be grouped, so the AI will put science buildings in the Science District
>>
>>337368290

Campaign is made of playing somewhat typical game over shard (think of floating part of world) to add it to your own. Each of such game takes few hours since you cant transfer too much between maps (actually, once per few battles you can get enough mana to re-use hero you had before or start with extra building or something). Shards unlock new buildings and units to add.

There are tons of shards and mutliple endings tied to your actions during the play, so clearing the campaign is basically cost of 200+ hours of total gameplay time. That is, unless you wont have to restart, because you screwed something over.

I'm talking about military and how the military views those tiles. Specifically, pillaging. Or, if certain tiles can be obstacles (like walls)

Civ5's AI never understood pillaging (as a strategy), much less how to move units, formations, or splitting up its army into objective and sub-objective. "Unrolling the city" is only going to make that worse because suddenly the AI must now consider lots of tiny sub-objectives in its plans, not just
