Is this series worth getting into or are there better 4X games out there?
MOO2 is widely regarded as the best of the series, and many would argue the best space 4x of all time. The new one is pretty good but still needs some polish. MOO3 is an abomination that was shot out back behind the shed long ago.

Definitely. I still play the original, but I can't help that when I play the first I get an overwhelming urge to play the second.

What I like about it is that it combines all identical ships to one group, so instead of a hundred individual scouts you just have one group of hundred in combat.

MoO1 is okay.
MoO2 is the greatest space-4x title of all time, no exaggeration.
MoO3 is an abomination that should be burned.

The first game holds up pretty well and feels more unique compared to 2 which cribs a lot of Civ mechanics just for the heck of it.

I love MoO1 and I wish they'd bring back the sliders. MoO2 was fantastic but it's literally just Master of Magic in space, but without magic and slightly worse combat
