I played it at PAX and it's only marginally easier in co op. You have to hit the ghost of your partner before it flies off the screen or he's gone and even if you do he comes back with one health. I'm also pretty sure they adjust the damage/health in co op.

The three who were all in on stage at the garden. The potato, onion and carrot.

The water drop in the forest.

The transforming zeppelin woman where you fly planes and fight her.

The flower in a meadow level.

I feel like there may have been one more but I really can't think of what it would have been.

The shop was also in the game. You could buy passives and different shot types. One passive can be equipped and two different shot types can be equipped. The plane level overrode your shot type and made you shoot missles.

Xbox is the only platform I don't own as of yet. Not because of fanboyism, just because I've been waiting for at least 3 games that I'd want on it before I grab it.
I really want to play Sunset Overdrive, and now Cuphead looks pretty slick.
That's only 2 games but I may take the plunge anyway because animation is my fetish.

That's completely wrong. If you look at the breakdown of that, a large portion of the money in that goes to the voice actor/director, with a far smaller budget for animation (which is done in korea). It doesn't take 9 months to make one episode, it takes 9 months to make one season and they work on all episodes during that 9 months at intervals.

Why go through the effort of hand-animating all of these like this? It looks cool but shit's gotta be taking lot of money and effort for something that can be done easier digitally, right? You can simulate artifacts that come with this style too. It's not like this style of animation can only be done on paper.

Because they wanted to make a game in traditional animated way. And no, you can't simulate this kind of animation. Tweens are 2d based, you can't force a 3d complex perspective out of a 2d plane. Even if you use a 3d model as a base/reference and trace over, there are things that work in 2d frame by frame drawing like that , that technically don't make sense or "work" in a real 3d based perspective. It's a dying art but it should be something all animators do. It's why a lot of 3d games have these horrible shitty animations because the animators of that never learned to do frame by frame 2d animation/motion.

But for real. I haven't really looked into this game much but I've just been wondering about it. A lot of criticisms I'm hearing about this game is a seemingly low amount of content and the fact that it's apparently taking forever to come out. It could be possible that manually animating everything on paper could be a hindrance in the game's production.

Fuck Japan for that, that's the reason Super is looking like SHIT, that one scene on episode 41 or something where the super shenron appears, the literally just increased it's size in after effects or something, wtf?

Animation takes A LOT of effort, and it pains me that a scrub VA (no matter how good they are) win MORE than animators, voice acting an episode can literally be done in one day, animating just one minute can take an entire week or even more depending on how complex it is.

I have animated in paper before, and it took me 5 months to animate 5 minutes, I love it, but it sure is under appreciated.

The creators love old cartoons, and are taking great pains to give their game the exact aesthetic of old cartoons.
Doing it digitally would not work, no matter how much simpler, cheaper, and easier it may be. This is not because digital is shit, but because it simply would not quite achieve the desired result of looking like an old cartoon.
As a result, doing this digitally would be phoning it in.

Finding an easier way that's easier on the budget isn't phoning it in. Cutting corners and being lazy is phoning it in. They're purposefully making it harder on themselves for what? They might not see it as harder, some people just prefer to animate on paper.

It feels different and many people prefer paper. The bite of your pencil meeting the paper is totally different to plastic on plastic, there's the fact you drawing is right in front of you and being able to flip your animation by hand. These may seem like small things but comfort is comfort.

Not massively but just using a pen makes you draw differently from a pencil. Different processes.

Depending on the illustrator it's preference. While those cintiq tablets are fine in their own right, they can sometimes be a bit janky and you still get artifacts all the time.

They're much cleaner and more useful for less detailed animation like the shit you see on youtube or newgrounds where there isn't as much fluid motion, but animating every single frame on one of them would be a pain in the ass for someone who doesn't use them and would probably take longer for these guys to use anyway.

There's also the issue of the pen not actually ever touching the 'paper' on those tablets, which fucks a lot of people over, and that they cost a fortune.
