My computer is old and I need to change out parts. What do you guys suggest, and budgetwise 400-500?
>>
Well, cant really do anything meaningful for 4-500, because you need a graphics card and a new processor.
>>
>>337300081
How much would I realistically need?
Also, I don't care if it's top of the line by any means, just pretty decent.
>>
>>337300014
4 more gigs of RAM
A slightly newer graphics card (I have an HD 6950 that works sweet)
Maybe another HDD?
>>
>>337300014
Just buy a new graphics card. Wait for the new cards and buy whatever fits your budget to allow the possibility of more RAM.
>>
>>337300163
honestly your cpu would likely be the last thing i would upgrade. a new GFX card would be 1st, then an SSD, then more/faster ram. Then if you had a sizeable chunk of cash left over i'd replace the cpu with a non-overclockable i5/i7 (because your mobo can't OC your cpu and the gains you get from OCing an i5/i7 will be minimal gains)
>>
if you are content with that resolution on your display just drop in a 960 and another 4gb of memory.
>>
>>337300424
>gains you get from OCing an i5/i7 will be minimal gains

you can push a i5 2500k from 3.30 to 4.5 without breaking a sweat what are you even
>>
>>337300163

Idk. I dont believe in upgrading "just a little" because on PC it means youll just have to do it again in a year or two. I would buy an r9 390 or something for like 300-350 bucks and go from there, but I would also up your cpu.

How good do you seem to think your computer needs to be?
>>
>>337301363
Just kind of want to play newer games, dont really care about highest settings, but would be nice to handle them normal/above average?
>>
>>337300014
Another 4gb of ram, a new GPU (if you want cheap look for something like a 750TI, it's a huge upgrade to what you have now and it doesn't even need a power connector) and more storage? A 2GB drive would do you nicely.

This isn't 1984 anymore anon
>>
>>337302427
Mah bad, gigs on the brain
>>
Thanks anons, going to go with a 950 a friend is hooking me up with, grab some more ram and work on getting another processor. Storage can come later, its not that big of a deal for me at the moment.
>>
>>337300014

used i5 3400

used HD 7970 or GTX 770 or a GTX 960/R9 280 I guess

4 more gb of ram

a corsair CX400 if you need a PSU
>>
>>337300081
You can do that, you're just a moran who overpays for everything.

>>337300014
Holdup OP, give me a few minutes.
>>
>>337303641
This except my 770 cant run shit at 1080p 60fps with no AA anymore so OP should get a used 980, pretty cheap atm.
>>
>>337303880

He's got a 1600x900 monitor. He should be fine.

GPU: http://gpushack.com/collections/gpushack/products/gigabyte-r9-390-g1
TOTAL: $502.89

Ditch the 4GB RAM you've got now - you don't want it mucking around with dual channel and the 16GB above is more than enough.

System should be good for the next few years.

Actually scrap the GPU and do this instead:

Same GPU, but $10 cheaper and you get a free hitman 2016 voucher (for what it's worth, it's shit a hitman game imho)

That Xeon would get outperformed by basically everything, even a 2500. There was a follow up on the linus video checking performance, and it was nothing special.

>>337300014
This is the best video card for the money at this point.

This 3470 is the same socket, so everything could be switched around, and the dell would have an i3 for a server or something.

Xeons have good cost-to-performance value if you stick to the older ones, but their clock speed vs. cache size means they're not optimal for gaming necessarily. See >>337301363 mine. Runs everything I play pretty well.

Gross. He alread has an 1155 mobo or whatever
>>
sell it for $200
add that to your $400-500

build new $600 pc
> skylake i5 6500
> stock cooler is fine
> b150m board
> r9 380
> 8gb single stick ddr4
> reuse hdd, case, peripherals

also $100-150 for a new 23" 1080p IPS monitor

wait for June or at most August for the new $200 card
> R9 480 or GTX 1060
>>
>>337300014
just git alienware
>>
>>337300758
yeah and the fps gains in the majority of games is minimal and not worth the extra heat/energy consumption plus the cost of a mobo to allow for OCing

>hurf durf what are you even
>>
>>337308678
Energy consumption is a non-argument, most of them can do it near stock 1.2v.
Not to mention, at worst, it's like 2$ a year extra for electricity if you have to go to higher voltage than that.
Extra heat wouldn't matter anyway since you would be running an aftermarket cooler, if you're not running an aftermarket cooler, well it would run at the same temps on a stock one at stock speeds as it would overclocked on an aftermarket cooler.
So extra heat would be equal.
Unless you're going to argue 50c on a stock cooler is somehow different from 50c overclocked on an aftermarket cooler.

Good CPU is getting pretty important for a lot of newer games nowadays, Witcher 3 for example for me went from 40-45fps in the big city to stable 60fps when I overclocked my 2500k from stock to 4.5Ghz.

The only point you have is the cost for a compatible mobo, but that wasn't the topic of argument in the anons post you replied to, he was just talking about your statement of minimal gains from OC i5/i7, which is just straight up false.

>>337307980

$600
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/XQtNLk

> i5 6500
> b150m mATX
> r9 380
> with new mATX case, new psu

$100-150 monitor
> 21.5 - 23" IPS 1080p <5ms monitor
> literally FUCKTONS of 'em so pick whatever

sell everything from your old PC EXCEPT the HDD and OS for $150-200

the onboard Intel HD 530 of the i5 6500 is actually more powerful than the ancient GT 9500

so you can actually save $200 off the $600 build, keep it and wait for the new Pascal / Polaris $200 GPU instead
