I only chose the healer roles because it felt more important than the other roles.
In FFXI you actually had to do a lot more than just watch health bars. As a lone healer RDM I typically had to buff everyone in the party who needed them, debuff monsters, remove negative status effects on my party members ASAP, heal (obviously) in a effective way all while trying to keep my MP at optimal levels.
When this was all done correctly it meant the party was happy, we were all having a good time and gaining optimal experience points or doing well in our endgame content. This felt pretty good I must admit.
In the MMO I played, healers and buffers were helpless outside of healing and buffing. They couldn't even kill the lowliest mobs on their own.
But it was also impossible to do anything in that game without heals and buffs.
And don't get me started on PvP. YOu fags haven't seen a real healer untill you've seen him heal in a 200v200 situation.

I like it. Generally melee has the most interesting mechanics to deal with. A lot of bad encounter design leads to ranged dps standing across the room not having to deal with anything.
