It's literally more strategic. On top of having to give out commands as the leader, you have to adapt to situations when shit goes bad, which is really exciting and engaging. You're also assuming the role of Door-kun, not anyone else. They are their own characters and they act on their own, which fits with the game's narrative too. Managing and react to them is the definitive way from both a gameplay and story perspective

In P4 I feel like Direct Commands was pretty much necessary to get anything done. All the party members were virtually useless late game, especially cunts like Chie and Yosuke. Lategame I was either using Dia after every fight or managing everyone's SP because it disappeared like fucking nothing.
In P3 I feel like they handled the combat way better in several aspects.

As for what you suggested for Baton Pass, I definitely see what you mean as each mainline game tends to put it's own touch with certain mechanics to differentiate itself from previous entries. Happy to see the demons as well, though I personally never had anything against the Shadows. Technically the Shadows are still in, as they serve as the guards for the dungeons you're going through, despite them turning into the demons in battle.
