Was it fucking necessary to have so many of these in the game? Literally 90% of chests in DS3 are mimics.

Its really just one area that like that, it doesnt help that Irihyll is smack dab in the middle of the game so you see a boat load of chests suddenly and like 1 of them is the real thing

This was already a good habit in Dark Souls 1.

There's not that many mimics, it's just that there aren't that many chests to compensate.

For the amount of mimics you would think they would mix up the signs to tell them apart . The chain has been the same since DaS it wouldnt fool anyone
>>
The only mimic that got me was the one in Smouldering Lake, I saw the giant demon and saw a chest across the room. Im thinking this is 99% sure to be a mimic, what like...what if it isnt..I want to open a chest and not be afraid! And it was a mimic, then the demon aggroed and used fire and killed the mimic
>>
I think FROM just used a 1 or 0 variable to determine if a chest is a mimic and accidentally flipped them all around. There are as many normal chests compared to mimics as you would expect vice versa.

The Dark souls series has made me wary of all chests, its a good thing they can't break because I always give a few whacks to every chest before opening them. That said yeah I agree with >>337278662 I think about 80% of chests NOT accessed from a hidden wall/secret area are fucking mimics which feels really high

>>337278553
Opposite happened for me, the mimic mauled all the dudes in that room while I was running away from them and then went back into chest mode in the middle of the room.
>>
>People missing the point

If you want a challenge to get to the chest, have it be guarded or hidden. Treasure is not more rewarding because I had to circle-strafe it for a bit.

Dark Souls 2 was actually smart about this. Chests could be destroyed, some chests had traps instead, there were different kinds of chests, etc. Being able to look at the chain and immediately know what kind of chest it is makes for very boring, predictable mimics.

The whole point of a mimic is that it surprises you. The people going ">falling for mimics" or "I never got tricked by a mimic" are just proving the point of how badly DaS3 fucked it up, because they're numerous but add no challenge.
>>
>>337279462
>that ending
>>
>>337279750
I kinda agree, forgot that DS2 had those metal chests and the trapped ones, i dont remember if they had chains or you could tell if they were mimics
>>
>>337279750

Word.

It honestly kind of pisses me off that there are absolutely 0 "trap" chests in dark souls 3.

2 had some good ideas, but everyone hated on it so much, FROM was too afraid to incorporate any of them.
>>
I kept expecting them to put a mimic bonfire somewhere in the game. Would have been pretty funny. Maybe some kind of creature with a flaming horn that looks similar to a bonfire, and it hides underground.
>>
>>337280213

I legitimately expected this when I came to the Grand Archives. Couldn't believe they'd just put a bonfire ten seconds from another bonfire.
>>
>>337277240
That doesn't make any sense. There's isn't much good gear found in mimics anyway, and you can just use a Talisman
>>
>>337277174
I've actually never died to a single Mimic in 3, and they killed me plenty of times in 1 and 2. In 3 all of their attacks are amazingly easy to avoid and they don't do nearly as much damage as they used to. Their only strong point is their health.
>>
>>337280161
Mimic chests had locks on them
>>
There's nothing wrong with mimic, it's just that there was so fucking many in the game it just sorta spoiled the fun of the enemy; being a surprise trap
>>
>>337280602
I bet it was a rather late change to put a Bonfire in every boss room, they did it after they had put all the other bonfires in the game. Totally unnecessary.
>>
I think the reason they put so many mimics is because at this point the player expects it.

>>337277028
People who say "it's just an enemy, kill it and get the item" are completely missing the whole point of a mimic. A mimic is supposed to play on the trust of the player, to put them on edge when they see a chest. It rewards a player who properly takes the time to make sure it's safe and punishes players who rush. If they just wanted to make a tough enemy that drops a good item, they could have just had a Black Knight type encounter, but they fucked up and reversed the mimic to chest ratio.

Yes. Toss the charm at them while they're still closed and they'll simply yawn, curl back up, and the item will appear. Symbols of Avarice can also appear like this, so pop a coin and equip the gold serpent ring / sage rapier if you've got them and the symbol will drop within your first couple mimics.

that's what the video said (I think Vaatividya or something), but I might be remembering it wrong

I think it's true though, considering every mimic has an item already inside them, and once you clear them, if you reset them and open them again, another item can appear (the Avarice), so it makes sense to me (the first item, however, will always be what should be in the mimic to begin with)

No. This is called being disappointed. Because even DS2 put more effort into being a game than this rehash fiesta. They can't even work with already existing material, as everything in DS3 feels like a bootleg version of the stuff it borrows from.

No you fag. A mimic is supposed to be nearly undetectable, a rare encounter that takes the player off guard. It's utterly worthless if the player (1.) expects an absurd proportion of chests to be mimics (2.) has an effortless method to detect mimics, resulting him just mindlessly checking each chest, confirming it's safe, and moving on, over and over again.

That's exactly what I said. Did you think I meant that every single mimic should be detected by looking at it's chain? No, I meant checking to see if it's breathing, if it's in a suspicious position and so on. The chain trick is stupid and makes mimics pointless as well since it's so easy to figure out what it is.
From did actually do this in some places, the chain on a chest is hidden by rubble once or twice, but not enough, the chain shouldn't be there.

Please learn to properly read posts before you get so mad, fag.

This seems like the most likely case considering the amount of simple code they managed to fuck up. It seems like half the features aren't even implemented. That was how the mimic in Sen's Funhouse got people. You get to the end of the line of traps and fucking bullshit. You don't notice the chest isn't square with the room, you think this is your reward. Nope, it's another trap. Chomp chomp.

Also it was the first mimic you find in the whole series (at least if you don't do any major sequence breaking), so it sure had the element of surprise against the player. If it weren't for messages or bloodstains, you would be practically guaranteed to die on it.

They need to change the model so that the chains are the same, and that mimics have super hyper armor and don't reveal they are mimics in one hit. Making them true mimics.
>>
Fill me in, is the OP just a memepost? Because I only remember 3 mimics or so throughout my entire playthrough I got pretty much everything. That's not something to be happy about though. Being tricked by the mimic was one of the best parts of Dark Souls 1. You're supposed to get a shock and go "Oh fucking hell!", that's the fun of it. Hitting the thing then fighting it is boring as fuck and misses the entire point of mimics.

In short, well done making the game boring and rote for yourself

For fuck's sake. Hit it with an Undead Hunter Charm. That's it.

If you up your item discovery you can use multiple to try and get the Symbol of Avarice. After hitting it with the first UHC, punch it to make it go back to sleep, then throw another one, then check to see if it dropped it (it might take a few seconds). Rinse and repeat until you get it. You can get one from every mimic this way.

Otherwise, the last mimic you kill will drop it.
>>
It's probably just there to keep you on your toes.
>there have been so many mimics already, surely THIS one isn't also a mimic!
There's also the fact that this game is supposed to be post-apocalyptic. Maybe adventurers already cleared out most of the non-mimic chests.
>>
>>337302278
I can recall three in the dungeon, I think. Right after you exit the beginning cell area, you go outside briefly and there's three guys there. One has a crossbow, then you go back inside. There's one right there. In the area with the giant shortly after, if you get across the bridge and through the sewer right the rats and basilisks, there's one at the end. If you get knocked off the bridge or jump off the bridge in the room with the giant, if you take the path back up, in the room with the ladder, there's another one. And then Profaned Capital isn't even seperated by a boss and is so damn small it might as well be the same area, and there are two more right next to each other there.
>>
>>337302208
Getting tricked by a mimic is interesting the first time it happens and then aggravating every time after that. We get it, mimics exist. But now I have to do all that shit over again and get my souls back because for some reason this thing gets to kill me from full health.

So yeah, in DS1 I was amazed by the first mimic encounter. But it's been three games now and I've fought so many mimics that it stopped being novel a while back.

Really what they need to do is introduce mimics that are disguised as things other than chests. Bonfire mimic, NPC mimic, you thought that was a staircase, fuck you it's a mimic.
>>
>>337302469

>>
>>337302208

>>337302519
I want a ladder mimic. Make it only accessible from the bottom and it just tosses you off when you're close to the top. The top of the ladder is some ledge with nothing on it, of course, because you have to kill the ladder, which drops the real reward.

the real reward is the silvercat ring
>>
It kind of defeats any purpose they might have had other than to be generic enemies you have to fight to get loot.

Also, making the first chest in the game one is dumb. The player should be slowly lulled into a false sense of excitement and security before they eventually get consumed.

They probably had faith that they had lulled their playerbase into that sense of security with the previous two games, not to mention the fromsoft game right before this, Bloodborne, not having mimics, they thought doing it right away would be cheeky enough to trick even experienced players.

There own message system and obvious mimic tells tripped them up in that regard.
