>Okay guys, let's turn our little top-down sandbox into a full-3d, third-person experience. Everything you could do in our last games you can do here, but with greater control, better atmosphere, a full radio soundtrack, a bigger interactive world, camera controls, a physics engine, and a fully voiced cast (aside from the staple unvoiced protagonist)

We'll take it to a different time in history, change the scenery, make the map bigger and filled with more interesting locations, add property/save point purchases, more than twice the weapons, add motorcycles, a plane, and an attack helicopter, get a new fully-licensed popular soundtrack that is iconic of the time period, make the protagonist a real character with a voice (that would still believably be a sociopathic criminal), and make the story even more iconic, paying tribute to hollywood crime movies of the time instead of just generic Mafioso-drama

Make it a different time in history again, add even more weapons, bicycles, more planes, more cars, car customization, detailed character clothing/hair/tattoo customization, stats and skill progression, weight/muscle/charisma scales/meters, gyms/restaurants/clothing stores that you can enter and actually do/interact with things inside, an EVEN BIGGER map, with THREE huge major cities, and small towns and natural environments in between, parachutes and a jetpack, an entirely new fully-licensed soundtrack full of popular iconic songs from the time period, the ability to swim/dive adding a new environment to explore, the ability to sneak and do stealth attacks, extra attack buttons as well as an expanded melee comabat system and three new fighting styles to acquire, casinos and video games and driving challenges and horse races and all kinds of other minigames and ways to interact with the world/city, romance options, and even the ability to climb over ledges/fences if your character's hands can reach.
>EVEN MORE succesful that Vice City, San Andreas is the most elaborate and jam-packed GTA game to date, and to think, the jump from GTA III to GTA: San Andreas all happened on one console, 2 generations ago.

>Alright guys, we have a new console here, so we need an overhaul. First off, rewrite the physics engine from the ground-up, really make it complex and detailed. Model and physics every single cigarette, every pebble, every single breakable piece of every prop in the game. Also, a whole new A.I system. Make NPCs react realistically to every situation you could throw at them, have them stumble and try to regain balance if they're offset, have them limp and recoil from location-specific damage, make their regular walk routine take them places to interact with the environment and each other. Also, new controls. A new and immersive shooting system that accounts for the environment, a new melee system, better "parkour", even the ability to get drunk and stumble around beligerently
>Now we need to put some things aside for our new focus, so make the map smaller, but make the player slower so that it feels big. Get rid of natural environments, get rid of planes. Make the world dusty and grey for realism. Different minigames that are less lucrative and more for flavour, also make some mandatory. Reduce the number of non-mission-specific building interiors. Reduce the number of cars. Get rid of bicycles. Cut the number of weapons in half or less. Get rid of car customization Cut clothing options in half and get rid of haircuts and tattoos. No more fat/muscle/charisma system, but add mandatory relationship development with side characters, make the protagonist very talkative, sympathetic, and human, despite the character being a sociopathic criminal who thinks nothing of theft, murder, and destruction. Set the game in modern times, and make an even bigger fully-licensed soundtrack, but with barely any iconic or popular songs due to modern music license difficulties, and iconography and popularity being descriptive measures, requiring a time period to be over in order to look back on it and pick "the best of".

Focus on a dramatic and emotional story above all else. Finally, make the first several hours of story and playtime one big tutorial that slowly introduces the player to concepts they should already be familiar with, and new concepts that would take a mere bullet-point to explain.

>Alright guys, we need to get back to our roots, so let's just take GTA IV, add a three-character system with even more complex and sympathetic characters, keep the map the same size but fill it up to 60% with empty outdoor environments, make things a little more colorful, get rid of the intricate A.I system and simplify the combat controls, add a couple more weapons total but make them all look/feel extremely similar and way less impactful, add many more cars and re-introduce car customization. Make car collecting a main feature. Bring back haircuts, tattoos, and more clothing options, but make characters change their clothes back to whatever simple rags they "prefer" whenever you aren't playing as them. Get rid of the exhaustive tutorial, but make story even more of a focus, as well as the improved online mode. Get rid of minigames altogether and don't bother making any non-mission-specific building interiors. Re-introduce "rampages". Make the biggest fully-licensed soundtrack ever, so that you'll have played the entire game inside and out before you've even heard half of it. Just make both the single-player and online world a big, empty playground to shoot people and get chased by cops, like GTA III.

IV was kind of a letdown but honestly I don't really know what kind of features they could have kept adding to their old engine to substantially improve the games. The new engine was a logical step
