Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence is pretty good, but in some ways it actually feels like a dumbed down, less interesting and easier Sengoku Rance. Honestly, just play Rance. It's fucking legit.
Yakuza Ishin is my favorite Yakuza game. If you don't know Nipponese you'll have to use the guide though. I used it to find certain items anyway, it's pretty fucking useful.
I actually really liked the story compared to the kind of dumb shit you get in 3 and 4. I still enjoyed those a lot, but Ishin was a bit more together, had a more unique theme of dual identities and has the best combat system yet, though I'm waiting on 0's western release to support further localization so I haven't experienced that yet.

Another one of their games, Daiakuji is also set in Japan and is just as good.
Except it's set in a fictional part of Japan which lost WWII to Womerica and after the occupation Womerica introduced a whole bunch of laws making sure that women ruled the country and men become a forced labor class able to be jailed for minor offences.
Main character is the heir to a yakuza family who went to war and has only just returned to Osaka from a POW camp.
He's unaware of the changes and gets beaten up by his old gang which is now ruled by his grandfathers mistress.

Daiakuji is sadly Jap only because nobody has the balls to translate the game.
Kichikuou Rance is translated and plays in a similar way.
Daibanchou is another one of their translated games that plays in the same sort of way.
Most the other Rance games are JRPGs
