It was MMOs until call of duty mw appropriated leveling mechanics. Now battle born and over watch are appropriating moba structure. Fps reinvents itself every few years or so, trying to be more like movies, more realistic, more esporty, more retro, whatever.

First Person itself isn't a genre no, but when it is utilized with a genre and is common enough to be worth a distinction, it forms it's own sub-genre. FPS is actually a genre, albeit a sub-genre. "FP" isn't.
