To each their own then. I play Civ 4 on-and-off too (Rise of Mankind / Rhye's And Fall mostly) and the one thing that I can never stomach is the graphics.

Civilization games have always looked like this. In fact that was one of the main deterents for me when my friends convinced me into getting the game. I had thought it looked too childish.

I mostly notice that the scale is much smaller than civ 5. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a mobile release with pc support.
It looks more like Civ Rev than it does Civ 4.

Nice. That's all I really wanted in terms of graphics.
Now let's see some evidence of depth in gameplay. This is what I REALLY care about. Everything else is fluff. If they get diplomacy working I can forgive bad graphics.
If this is because there'll be a tablet release then I don't mind at all, mods will fix it. I'm more interested in the actual mechanics.
I suppose they don't want the game to look exactly the same as civV.
