Someone is selling a brand new ps3 120gb slim near me for $200. I'm pretty sure these were released in 2009 and supposed to come on firmware under 3.50. How would I make sure? Would it say the release date on the box or something? Were the slim 120gb ever released over 3.50?
Would it be worth it? I'm pretty sure I can jew him down a little bit. What would be a good price?

That's subjective, PS3 has games that are 30+ GB
You really do miss out on XBLA and Xbox Classics but any CFW PS3 can also run every PS2/PS1 games. It can even run PSP games but I'm not 100% sure how to get it working and never looked into it properly.

With cfw yes. I think there are a bunch of patches that make it safer, but you do risk getting banned. Though I've heard if you're running a modded game on xbox live you get instantly banned?

For the Xbox, back then there used to be wave bans, where a lot of people who played modded games online would get banned at the same time.
I've had my cfw PS3 for quite a while now and never got banned, but I don't play a lot of games online. Only used to play GTAV online when it came out, played it for days, never got banned.

Definitely not. First, I'm positive all refurbished systems are upgraded to the lastest firmware. Second, I'm pretty sure most fat ps3s are YLOD victims. They'll only last 6 months tops before it happens again. Would not touch with a 10 foot pole.

Nope, some games dont run at all. It can't run any of the Ace Combat games on PS2.

You need an e3 flasher or some other device where you open your ps3 or you need to pay someone to do it. Both cost about $50.

I found an old fat ps3 when throwing away some old electronics, the version was below ofw 3.55 and I managed to downgrade it through some basic guides.
It worked for 2 years until after a summer where I used it as a power source for my chromecast/popcorntime. It suddenly shut down and got YLOD. Fixed it but the blu-ray shit was making sure I can't start multi-man again.
I got another CFW PS3 slim, and that one broke down in less than a month. Had to redneck fix the YLOD and now the fan is on 80% the whole time it's running.
