I want to get into Serious Sam but i don't know where to start.

What are the games worth playing and ones i should avoid.

Also are the original 2 games on steam behind a bundle pay wall?
>>
>>337225153
Play the 2nd one
Story doesn't matter
They're all pretty fun desu but 2nd was my favorite and it's super cheap for what you get
>>
>>337225153
>i don't know where to start.
At the beginning, you buffoon! First Encounter followed by Second Encounter.
>ones i should avoid.
None. 3:BFE is the weakest by far but it's still a decent game. Anyone who tells you to avoid 2 is a no fun wanker.
>>
If you are a total casul, start with BFE. Or start with First encounter then second encounter. Dont play the second first. Its not a bad game, but is way too diferent.
>>
>>337225153
You start at the fucking beginning.
First Encounter HD
then Second Enounter HD
Then Serious Sam 3

Serious Sam 2 never happened and original devs pretend this as well.
>>
>>337225635
>>337225901
What's so bad or serious about SS2?
>>
>>337225901
Didnt HD versions fuck a level or two? Something about gravity being altered.

Anyway, SS: Revolution is the cheapest way to get First and Second encounter
>>
Play The First Encounter and The Second Encounter classic. TFE HD if you absolutely must but you miss out on the best level in the franchise if you play TSE HD since Croteam are hacks and couldn't be bothered building their fantastic physics engine again for the HD release.

Play TFE > TSE > 2 > 3. 2 is a bit cartoony and a pretty clear Halo clone with the akimbo guns, tacked-on vehicles, characters who talk at you and get in the way of your killing shit but it's still fun. 3 is Call of Duty without health regen for the first couple of levels but once it gets rolling and opens up it's a ton of fun and the DLC for it is the best game in the series.

>>
>>337226626
They didn't fuck anything, they just replaced the gravity room puzzle secret in a certain level with a different room since their HD engine doesn't support gravity fuckery. It's still an objective improvement over the originals.

>>337226587
It was designed as XboxHuge exclusive later ported to PC.
Meaning much smaller levels, less enemies on screen, fuckton of loading screens and vastly simplified cartoony visuals with bobblehead aesthetic.
>>
>>337226839
>but you miss out on the best level in the franchise if you play TSE HD

What do you mean?
>>
>>337227239
He's shitposting, you don't miss on a level but a gravity room puzzle in a certain level, they replaced it with a different one anyway. You have to be beyond fucking retarded to go with originals just for 1 gravity puzzle shooting room that lasts maybe 5 minutes total.

SS3 starts as an intentional parody of CoD for first 3-4 levels and ramps up into classic Serious Sam feel very, VERY quickly after you kill the ayylmao helicopter boss.

It's the same fucking game with one different puzzle room, there's a different movement puzzle in place there in HD version you know faggot. But you don't know that since you're a parroting nigger that never played it.

>Totally but 3-4 levels is far too long. A joke shouldn't last more than a level, tops.
I agree it felt a bit dragged out but rest of the game delivers so fucking well that it honestly didn't bother me.
>>

Shallow gameplay that fails to update itself or expand in a meaningful way. The games become exhausting due to them being 1 trick ponies.

A few small changes to make the good but we just can't have that.

BFE is the easy one because it doesn't spam kleers every half second and there aren't a lot of traps like the old ones, but you should really have patience with the boring as fuck level 2 and 4.
>>
>>337225153

Painkiller Black is a pretty good jumping off point.
>>

Garbagie indie games. Literal garbage.
The shitty RPG Maker one is the worst (Random Encounter).
Double D has a seemingly interesting gimmick in form of gun stacking but once you play it you realize what an unfun floaty piece of shit it is and how much of a clusterfuck the stacking aspect is.
>>
>>337227676
>a different movement puzzle in place
A fucking boring one, sure. Graphics look fine either way so I don't see why anyone should play the mechanically inferior re-release over the original games that the rest of the game's fanbase grew up with.
>>
>>337227821
>mechanically inferior
>because it doesn't have a shitty puzzle room that doesn't even last longer than 5 minutes

As much as I love the game, this. It's one of those games that get a lot of praise on /v/ for being "based" and sort of old school shooter-like. It should be fun on paper but it's honestly much worse than any of the modern military/futuristic shooters

This desu. I played Painkiller before Serious Sam and honestly SS is painful to play after the relative smoothness and variety of Painkiller.

Reminds me of how playing FEAR ruined Doom 3 for me when I later played it.
>>
>>337227690
>that fails to update itself or expand in a meaningful way
Every time you pick up a new gun the gameplay changes. You get more options to deal with enemies and the way you approach each encounter changes as a result. By the end of the games you've got a dozen unique guns and they all have their uses depending on the situation (aside from the Tommygun and single pistol which are made obsolete and the lasergun which is just a different minigun)

By the time you get to the huge-scale battles at the end of the game you've got opportunities to use every gun you've got to take down different enemies. Groups of Kleers at a distance? Rocket them. Too close? Knock them down with a cannonball. Switch to your minigun to tear up some harpies. Back to the rocket launcher to send some firepower at those mechs in the distance. Pistols to kill that Kamikaze running at you. Chainsaw for the Werebull about to knock you down. You're constantly mobile which gives you a lot of time to roam the battlefield mid-combat and see what ammo's available so you know what weapons you can prioritize. The game has a ton of depth beyond the shallow-seeming surface.

This is exactly it. People are blind to their own favoritism and cannot objectively identify flaws even in things they like. Serious Sam needs some serious gameplay updates, pun not intended. Better movement would be one, more strategy would be another. Guns that upgrade as you use them would be nice too. More power ups that are not generic and bland. Actual level design and maybe even get the platforming to work in a fun way.

See this guy for an example of grasping. Everyone know what he just posted, he just fails to see the evolution and refinement that is sorely needed.

There is not many info on SS4 but hopefully they will make some changes that still keep the game fun.

Problem is that when they tried to mix up some mechanics in SS2 it didn't work. SS3 was fun imo, and you had to prioritize between enemies really hard otherwise you were fucked. See the floating lady monsters who could immobilize you.

>Actual level design and maybe even get the platforming to work in a fun way.

I agree on level design.

I'm not a fan of platforming, but hopefully they won't do it in a way how they did it in SE with some stupid jumping rooms.

Excatly, you don't need massive changes to think a game is improved. Hell just giving weapons switchable firing modes can change the gameplay enough.

Some people need to understand that not every change is a good thing. It needs to fit with the game first before continuing on.

What would you like to see in Serious Sam 4?

For me it's:
>Alternate fire modes
Could add a lot of variety to the combat
>More worthwile secrets and pickups
Less cases of "pick up +1 hp, get attacked by 10 kleer" would be nice
>an automap or any map really
Would be nice
>more jetpack sections
They were pretty fun in BFE
>more Undercode music
It's a shame they only use it for boss battles, Undercode is great
>Bring back the weapons from TSE
Especially the chainsaw
>Keep the Mutilator
It was fun
>Places other than Egypt.
I have nothing against Egypt, in fact I love egyptian levels, but I'd like to see Sam go to other places.
