Mercy is fun as hell. I actually enjoy keeping my team from exploding and forcing aggressive trades through healing and damage amps. I enjoy flying all over the place and the occasionally taking shots at people when the situation calls for it, shutting down people's plays. Being a healer gives me a degree of control over others, and the bonus on top of all of this is that Mercy isabsolutely gorgeous.

Not that guy, but for me it's her movement options perfectly complementing the need to look at your other teammates while still gauging the guy you're currently healing/buffing. You're constantly zipping between players, and if you're good and your team is good, you can effectively never need to use her Ultimate until maybe the final push, when it's usually a worthy self-sacrifice to win the game.
So basically, flying is fun and she does it faster than anyone else. Basically like playing Spider-Man 2 as a healer.

i enjoy when it's the situation of half my team being damaged and picking who needs how much healing before healing the next person and if they're good enough to warrant healing to full before healing the next person. zooming between the people as they're situated around random places on the map is fun and good for escaping asshole reapers or roadhog hooks if they don't do the kill combo properly.
the res is fantastic, but it's not particularly fun to use.
i get the most enjoyment out of whipping out the pistol and nailing idiots in the face with it. guessing where they will move is challenging and rewarding, and though it makes very little difference if you scrape up a few kills as mercy, you support your team well, and can damage boost anyone who isn't fucking garbage, and you can tell the difference in their kill times.
the faster their enemies die, the less people there are shooting them, the less damage they take, the less chance they (and i) have of dying.

The most blatant thing is the level and randomized loot system. Level effects pretty much nothing and a money-for-points system would be better-received and let people get just the unlocks they want faster, but the current system gives the illusion of progression and engenders a compulsive desire to gain more loot boxes.
beyond that there's a ton of features designed to maximize the effects of the game on your rewards system and minimize anything at all that might interfere with it
-Eliminations are kills+assists
-Eliminations are immediately noticeable on tab stats screen, deaths are hidden in the middle bottom
-You cannot see teammate stats, so you cannot get called out by teammates
-Huge "YOU ELIMINATED X" after every kill with accompanying recognizable sound just to make sure your brain knows to release serotonin
-Easy kills for every character, large hitboxes, low updaterate to client w/client-side hit detection
-extremely fast pace, no downtime between games
-POTG and Commends, which are fucking brilliant as they give nothing but everyone wants them
And that's just the more abstract and obvious things, basically everything about the game from the aesthetic to the sound design to the damned maps is designed to keep you hooked.
Blizzard is very open about hiring psychologists and giving them lots of data and heavy access to development.

The difference is that Blizzard are fucking MASTERS, and while most games only include these elements tangentially (unlock/level system after fights for example) Blizzard has woven it completely into the gameplay.
Even the things other people already do Blizzard does better. Levelling up in most shooters provides access to better weapons and items (which in itself is a terrible idea but that's another thread entirely), which imposes an effective cap on rewarding the player for levelling; in Overwatch it gives you a single loot crate with randomized items, which means you can level up basically forever.
