Why does CDProjekt fail so hard at color/lighting? Especially

Why does CDProjekt fail so hard at color/lighting? Especially after the great tuning they did with the console version of 2 I don't understand how 3 looked like such dogshit and continues to look worse in each expansion
>>
>>337214414
>my personal taste is how everything should be!
I think it looks great; I'm looking forward to the new expansion.
>>
>>337214414

Why are you so autistic anon?

I've never looked at anything in my life and thought, "wow if only I tilt the blue a little the colors will be REALLY poppin"
>>
>>337214414
The bottom is obviously meant to portray distance better
>>
Which is original? Bottom looks a little better.

>>337214519
>There's no such thing as basic aesthetics, everything is just everyone's opinion and nobody can ever say anything critical or constructive ever

>>337214536
There's only so much you can do with a static image. I corrected the most egregious errors(the blue shift is the most obvious one but there are several other changes, look harder anon) but honestly the whole shot is kinda fucked, I don't know how they managed to regress so much when their past work clearly showed a more even sensibility.

>>337214647
Bottom is edited, top is original
>>
>>337214962
I think you did a pretty good job, honestly. CDPR is obsessed with adding blue filters over literally everything. Blue this, blue that, need some pop in hidden? just add a blue hue in the distance.
>>
>>337214721
>>337214962
Bottom looks more natural, top looks a sweetfx mod with vibrance a little too high
>>
>>337214414

2 looked like shit
>>
The blue and Bloom gives it a more fantasy feel.

That's fine by me considering this is not a historically accurate game and a lot of it revolves around myths and fables.

>>337215334
It's a good edit
>>
>>337215098
Witcher 3 has a yellow filter though, not blue. I think for this expansion they changed it to blue since they fixed up some LOD and view distance stuff. Yellow is just fucking ugly
Also blue filters are kinda a universal thing. It happens in movies all the time.

Everyone installed a ReShade anyways

I tried to keep the "fantasy saturated palette," if only because the way everything is rendered, grass in particular, looks really shitty if you give it a realistic color palette. The results are kind of mixed, I'd say.

>>337215938
Yeah I know but as you can see Touissant has alot less than Velen did, they did some small improvements to this since they had the time to.
>>
>>337215758
Unfortunately these are just photoshop edits anon. Also there are a few things I did that can't really be applied as a postprocess shader ala sweetfx.

A big problem with a lot of modern games is that they tune the lighting for a few specific cutscenes/trailers/whatever and then it just kinda goes to shit outside those segments. There's no real unilateral postprocess you can do because the way in which the lighting is fucked up depends on the situation in the game. Just to use this thread as an example I actually turned the contrast down in the OP but turned it up in the second image.

I honestly agree and don't really understand why people seemed to insist 2 was some kind of technological masterpiece, BUT I had to give them credit for overhauling the lighting in the X360 version.

For example:
>360
http://images.eurogamer.net/2012/articles//a/1/4/7/5/1/4/2/360_lighting1.png
>Original PC
http://images.eurogamer.net/2012/articles//a/1/4/7/5/1/4/2/PC_lighting1.png

Article for those interested: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-the-witcher-2-tech-analysis

It was such a dramatic change for the better and leaves me confounded as to how they backtracked so much; even the early "pre-downgrade" trailers for 3 had questionable lighting at times and it's just gotten progressively worse from there.

I'm not even talking about LOD, fog, textures, whatever. Games developers don't give lighting/color enough respect imo; it can have a really transformative effect. ENBs and Sweetfx speak largely to this, given that they're basically glorified color filters yet fuel a whole dialectic about "muh masterrace." Changes to the actual lighting engine and in-pipeline color-correction would be even more dramatic.

Also there are a lot of failed scenes/environments that wouldn't even have been attempted if a real artist just sat down for a minute and thought about the technical implications.
>>
>>337220037
>I'm not even talking about LOD, fog, textures, whatever.

This will never cease to make me sad as fuck. The way the game was lit and coloured in the VGX Trailer was just fucking perfect.

At least mods are doing somewhat of a job at bringing it back closer to what it originally looked like the in the earlier Trailers/Demos, but modders will never be able to 100% fix it and get it to look quite like it did back then. Not to mention it'll never change the fact that CDPR fucked up hard, lied etc.
>>
>>337220373
I am fine with that downgrade, there was no way it was going to look like that because consoles.

I am not okay with the second downgrade though. They had that 30? minute video in 2014 around E3, which was the first case of people noticing this doesn't look like the VGX trailer, that still looked damned good.

Then the final game didn't even look like that anyways.

There is definitely a difference between showing in-engine/mockups in a short 2m trailer at VGX 2013, but a completely different thing showing a full 30m demo at E3 2014.

Literally says in-game footage. Why is it so hard to believe that this ran on PC before it was downgraded to consoles?
>>
>>337220373

I'd think I was lied to if they hadn't showed what the game looked like prior to release. It's really simple, people saw that CDPR wasn't able to achieve everything they wanted within the specs that even people on high end PCs would be able to handle and went a different direction.

People had a choice at this time, don't buy the game, or buy it anyway and complain.

They chose to complain for the entire year preceding the games release and a year after.

Meanwhile From downgrades and says, "Fuck off'" after releasing a different looking game and nobody says anything at all.

The real trick maybe is just not to show the footage of your game before it releases. Just release it. Actually lie to your audience and you'll be rewarded with not having to hear any scrutiny afterward.

Nobody ever talks anything but praise about From here, thus affirming my point.

They definitely had their good moments with this game. There's a concept art/extras folder in your game files that shows you how they designed independent color schemes for the different areas. I really liked what they did with Skellige - using this kind of sunset yellow and deep blue to give a constant sense of cold, ocean climate. Only thing I'd change is more white in the waves (foam) and less fog so we can really see those impressive mountains. But that's all machine limitations, so it's forgivable.

I can't say I really like what they're doing with colors in Touissaint. It seems very gay (in the medieval sense) and doesn't fit TW3's gritty, dark'n'mature vibes. Hopefully they'll resolve that with some really nasty subplots. Hoping for more blood than wine, basically. We'll see.

e3 had better lod, more details and geometry, grass shading, tessellation (water+terrain+buildings), better particle effetcs, better lighting, more npcs, longer draw distance, better water etc.
also, it's not a game that requires 60fps (i.e not a shooter nor heavy action): 970/290+i5 can high/ultra mix at 60fps, e3 was compketely doable
>>
>>337223341

>>337223394
Just because something is more important than the other doesn't make the other not important at all. And just because you don't care about downgrades doesn't mean others should be shit eating cucks like you as well. Retard.
>>
>>337223538
E3 had better LOD in certain situations, but it was actually much worse overall. See this: >>337219413
Look beyond Novigrad. There's about ~50 trees I'd say being rendered in the background before release, the entire map is rendered in release
>>
>>337223602
It's not the issue of whether there is enough content. It's the issue of the fact that they set out to make something then stop about 60% into it and cut everything that had huge meaning in the game. There is a reason UI barely worked on release. There is a reason why after a certain point in the story you randomly get 5 levels when getting one level before usually took 2h. And so on and so forth. Just go and read what they have cut and what we can assume they have.
>>
>>337223778
And that is the exact reason I said you are whats wrong with the game's audience.

>you shouldn't complain about such things, you should let them go

>>
>>337223341
Trees and foliage do actually move quite a bit in real life. I was surprised myself when I had the same thought but then started paying attention and noticed shit really does move around a lot in real life.

The real problem is that there are only ever 1-2 points of articulation; it looks less like leaves blowing in the wind so much as obvious oblique transforms.

>>337222196
Changing the fog/sky to pure white makes the shot look more like midday whereas the original looks to be around mid-late afternoon. Also the contrast is a little overblown; some detail is lost in the shadows/highlights.

In cloudy weather gradations tend to be very subtle and almost flat-looking; this shot was very difficult to edit because a lot of the little nuanced GI-type stuff isn't actually present in the original image so even if you adjust colors/tonemapping perfectly it'll end up looking flat; artists try to compensate in a variety of ways from using contrasting colors to blowing out the darkness/brightness, which results in a more "dynamic" looking but faker image. CDProjekt is the king of this, constantly using overblown contrast, saturation, AND sharpening filters in their promotional material and target renders. They cooled off on this a little with the retooled lighting in the 360 version of 2 but for some reason it's back -- in force -- now.
>>
>>337224040
That is not what I said. I said that since the game is inconsistent as a result of the cuts. I'd be fine if the game had much less content (even similar to TW2, no useless open world etc) but was actually consistent. As it stands the end product isn't.
>>
>>337223778

>If you saw what the game looked like before it came out and didn't throw a tantrum you are a cuck

Nice. I'm sure you can apply that logic to just about anything in life.

>If you buy a hamburger from a restaurant and don't like how it looks when it comes out you're a cuck if you eat it and don't slam your fists to the floor crying

Every game ever has a false advertisement if you think that a screen from years previous a games release is exactly how it will have to look.

They showed what it looked like previous release(which like no companies do) and are the only company that actually gets told they are false advertising.

This also happened in MGSV, but you'll never hear anything about that.

MGSV and Ubisoft games also have about 3x the exposure that TW does.

TW3 has 100x the shitposting, despite the fact that they actually showed accurate footage that contradicted what had been seen previous so there'd be no misinterpretation. Ubisoft, KojiPro, nor From had never done that, and I think this is where CDPR made the mistake. They should have been more disingenous, not less.

>>337225109

Actually, I'm telling you they didn't lie, because unlike other companies they showed what the game looks like before it came out.

From games have multiple threads up at a time with 0 shitposting despite the fact that they said they don't care they sold a game on bullshots.

Witcher showed what the game looked like, and regardless of this they will have been called liars for like a year and a half by a small collective of dedicated shitposters.

I mean it kind of has to be small considering the games stratospheric success.

The reason TW3 downgrade gets more shitposting than Ubisoft games is that everyone agrees that Ubisoft is malicious and unforgivable. There's no argument going.
But when you attack CDPR, you always get Witcher fans defending it, despite doing something just as bad as Ubisoft. This generates much more discussion and shitflinging.
>>
>>337216803
The color correction in 2 was cancer. It changes so much you can't even use a shader injector to reliably alter the pallate. The game was over saturated too fuck with green blue and red depending on the CC in a given area.
>>
>>337225385
>Actually, I'm telling you they didn't lie
And you are wrong, because telling the truth right before release after lying the whole time, doesn't cancel out the "lying the whole time" part. A lie doesn't become not a lie when you reveal the truth in the end, after you already lied.
>>
>>337225712
The worst thing about CDPR's downgrade is how they outright lied.

At least when you see Ubisoft "gameplay" videos you can think "it wont look like that when it's finished" and they tend to keep quiet up until release.

CDPR however repeatedly said "nope, we definitely haven't downgraded anything"
>>
>>337222394
Yeah well those comments are lies. Skel looks warm as fuck.
>>
So all this talk and no ENBs or ReShades posted.
>>
>>337226490
There's no ENB for TW3 and reshades are trash.
>>
>>337214414

Holy shit, I want to live there.

>city starts to suffer from being on a hill
>trees start getting too heavy for the hill to support them
>lack of proper footing to expand causes infrastructure become ravioli
>information age hits
>getting electricity, not to mention internet, costs a fucking fortune
>that fucking mountain in the distance would probably cause the whole city be in a blind zone
>eventually city limit starts to hit that fucking mountain
>infrastructure is still ravioli
>city starts to suffer from landslides every rainy season
>eventually one fuckhuge landslide covers it all
>a new plan to properly rebuild city is made
>it requires everyone to sell their land to the city

FUCKING LONDON

I'm using one? It's pretty good.
>>

>>337226120

You're wrong and let me tell you why.

>"Throughout the game development process, a game is constantly being balanced not only in game playability, but also in the realm of resource management,” From told MCV.
“A developer is always challenged with creating the most rewarding gaming experience while delivering continuity in graphical quality, gameplay dynamics, and balance within the game. The final version of Dark Souls II displays the culmination of this delicate balance and we’re very proud of the positive media and fan reception for the game.”

They released a game showing only bullshots and said the same exact things CDPR did but you twist logic that CDPR attempted to trick you despite you and I both knowing what the game looked like before it came out.
>>
>>337223140

>Instead of being pissed they removed so much meaningful content from the final game

Care to enlighten us what content was removed?
>>
>>337214414

>no reflection of that way castle in the lake
>looks like oblivion

Wow, Witcher more like Shitter 3!
>>
>>337227810

Why would the castle reflect in the water from that direction?

When you look at reflections in the water it reflects whats directly behind it from where you're facing it.

Not whats behind you.

Not whats off to the right.
>>
The worst part of W3's graphics for me is foliage. Grass and those fucking fullbright bushes that look like shit at every time of day.

Then water, water looks like jello before its fully hardened
>>
>there are people on 4chan who think they have a computer strong enough to play what the witcher 3 looked like before the downgrade

lol

so is there a sweetfx preset in the thread that makes everything less oversaturated or what?

im not reading 300 shitposts to find it

Watch dogs ultra graphics settings were still in the game, they just hid them because they didnt want people with PCs blowing the fuck out of consolefags just after the next gen consoles came out

Thats what people have an issue with
>>
>>337214414
bottom looks too saturated

which is the real one
>>
>>337228839
Do you know realize how stupid what you just said is?
Secretly leaving the settings there for PC users to enjoy is better than removing them completely for console parity like CDPR did.
>>
>>337229620
They were not removed, they no longer existed because they scrapped all the older stuff when they decided to make RedEngine 3 vs. using an upgraded 2.5 that didn't really scale well and would hurt console and PC experiences.

It sucks, but it happened.
>>
>>337229397
uh what

I like how each area has different lighting/look to it. Skellige has better view distance/LOD than Velen because you are more likely to use those views and you need it for island sailing. Kaer Morhen can have those nice clouds and LOD because its a tiny area

People are still sayng the downgrade didn't happen.

I mean I am as big of a fanboy as anyone, but they pretty much admitted the day after the release.

Quite sure they said the original footage had Global Illumination but they couldn't get it run in open world with consoles. All these color corrections won't do anything to change that because the technology simply isn't in the game
>>
>>337233126
It's too extreme to be anything but "stylized," but I don't know about kitsch. Even if that's true it seems like an ill-conceived aesthetic choice
