I'm the democratic collective, ignore me hemorrhaging energy, I've done that on purpose for a bit because I kept reaching the cap, I'm also a retard so I'm probably playing the game all wrong.

The Seban Empire are my vassal and I'm slowly trying to integrate them into my society, I've also found a primitive species on a planet below that empire which should be exciting, even though I'm terrible at the same its really fun and I haven't been wiped out yet.

Ever played a Paradox game? Ever played a 4X game? Ever played a strategy game?

If you said 'yes' to one of those then you can probably survive by turning on the 'explain everything' button that the little AI helper prompts you with at the start of the game. Otherwise it might be overwhelming for you at the start.

You have some options.
Firstly, all systems that you have surveyed will change their names to white rather than gray on the galaxy screen, and the resources you can acquire there is shown.
As for finding the specific system you want, you can either look through the list of species and they will be listed there (you can filter out all non-Pleb races to only see the ones you can spy on easier) or you can simply use the search function if you prefer that. It's in the bottom right of the screen.

the first play through I forgot i was playing a paradox game and didn't pause at all
I ended up with 3 colonies surrounded by massive civs that wiped me out instantly

Then i roleplayed as some ultranazi birds so everthing balanced out

I'd appreciate though if they added an "survey continuously" or "survey in selected range" feature, plus adding surface AI and the ability to make sure there is always X ships at hand.

It's very random which technologies will be offered to you, although if you always research the "more options" thing as soon as you see it pop up, as well as always scan the debris of everything you kill, you will soon have plenty of options to select each time a new research is done. Still, if you really need that "Colonize ocean planets" or "Clear volcano debris" science it could take you several years before it is offered to you. I expect there will be a mod for this very soon with a proper tech-tree.

You get three choices of technology to research in each of the three tech pools. It's completely random what technology appears, but some technologies are only enabled once you research other prerequisites.

It's all fucking random. And a little bit irritating. If you've got two important choices to make, say between better warp engines or a more advanced reactor, then you better think real fucking hard about your decision because if you're unlucky then that other technology might not appear again for a long time. I was stuck with Fusion Reactors for like 30 years, after passing up the opportunity to research something better.

Things aren't explained super well, but they aren't overly complicated either. The first time you play you will pick things that "sound good" and some will perhaps disappoint you - Both for racial choices and research - But you will learn from it and do better and better. It's random - But it can be manipulated to some extent. Just go to war with a race or some neutral early on, kill one of their ships or some flying space cow you encounter somewhere, and send a scientist to the wreckage. The Fallen Empires don't care about you most of the time - But they can be hostile towards you if you really piss them off somehow. And some rare few of them can be territorial and pissed if you box them in completely or steal their systems with border expansions. Just throw and embassy onto them if you're worried about them as I've heard that as long as you're above -75 "friendliness" with them, they'll never attack you.

It's not hugely complex. You have to design your own ships to fill different roles depending on what you stick on them, or what you hope to counter. The different civilizations will all have varying design philosophies as well. Different weapon types are good at doing different things, different ship classes are better or worse at doing different things, and so on. You'll also have to slap armor, shields, engines, combat computers, and everything in between on there somewhere. And of course you'll always want the best technology that space money can buy.

After that you pick an admiral to lead the fleet, smash it into the enemies, and that's where the complexity suddenly stops. You don't control anything that happens in the battle itself.

It's a bit like EVE online, in my opinion - But with less micro management. Usually it's whomever has the biggest fleet that wins, but you can turn the tide significantly by entering the battle with the right preparations to counter whatever shit they'll be using against you. For early game, I like Missiles on my Corvette's and those turrets that destroy enemy fire on my Destroyers, with deflective shields. Take almost no casualties that way unless the enemy fleet is more than twice your size.

You have little control over the battle. I heard they will add more formations later, but the ships fight automatically after you give the order, using the best methods based on the things you equipped them with. You can manually retreat, but it depends on your warping choices. You can always jump through a worm-hole, for example. Warp drives have a bit of a cooldown though and can easily be scrambled with early tech so that they are more or less useless. Be aware!

I directly control 5 planets and there are about 20 planets spread over 6 sectors. I'm integrating the Uv Xantt's 3 planets and in 30 years, I'll integrate the Cyggan's 6 planets.

To my north, there are about 5 uncolonized habitable planets I have yet to claim, and there's about 30 more that I can't colonize yet all over my empire, either because I don't have the tech, or because I have Non-adaptive and Habitability is low.

It allows you to grow much faster, expand your empire's borders and get more outposts up, and get huge benefits to your chosen edicts and policies. Simple things like building ships 33% faster and for 25% less cost is pretty amazing when you are at war. Or just grab a good old bonus to power credit generation. With enough influence gain, you can have tons of these bonuses running on multiple planets constantly.

The Military Tech is just your starting tech - You can change that really early on. Truthfully there is hundreds of choices to make your race and rule truly unique but most of them can be changed as the game is played and isn't "locked" in with your racial traits.

What is a pop? English is not my native language so I can't quite comprehend what's that supposed to be.

What do I do with species that haven't reached the space age yet? I found another fungal race which's highest accomplishments is air travel and build a watch post to spy on them.

But I can't engage in any diplomatic relations, the tooltip always says that they have no means to engange or something like that. Why is that? Why can't I just land and engage in such relations? I know that I can help them reach the space age per watch post, so thats one way to show myself, but what does that do me? Is the only way to get that planet, by attacking it? Can I even attack it at this stage?

Honestly I love uplifting, it's one of the most fun aspects of the game. My last empire I had around 50 colonised worlds of my own as well as 7 uplifts. Good fun
