How fucked am I if i dont understand anything at all in calc in CS? I passed other math class like linear algebra and discrete math at B- at worst but i got E on my calc ;-;

An E? What's that? Intermediate between D and F?
>>

You wing it nigga

You don't even need Calculus for CS

Social ones more than anything. Not that you'll get a job by having zero qualifications, but who you know feels ten times more important now than it did in the past.
>>
>>337192120
Well your skillset needs to be particularly pigeonholed so that you can't realistically find other (inevitably better) work.

right here

i have my organic chemistry final tomorrow and I stopped going to lecture 3 months ago.

it can't be that hard, considering I easily got an A in topology and abstract algebra. it's fucking chem, it's the most braindead STEM major next to biology

i'll probably study for 3 hours and pass with a B like I always do
>>
You need to be able to do something substantial like coding, art, sound/music etc. You won't be able to start as an idea guy or whatever unless you can fund a team yourself.

I was watching first season of Gamecenter CX, the one where he interviews Japanese devs, and came to conclusion that best skillset to have to get into vidya has to be one that is not related to vidya in any way.
>>
>>337192582
Most game programmers don't need to know anything beyond basic high school math. Engine programmers do need to know some, but most programmers program gameplay and write scripts which requires very little math

Dont work for vidya but i'll guess it has to do with programing, creative problem solving and extensive knowledge of something other than "nerd culture"

> Literally coming up with excuses and trying to justify why you don't want to get your hands dirty
It is literally a fact. The main bottleneck is memory. Has been for the last decade or so.

There is a reason why there are so many caches.

Optimization by memory, placing your data structures so CPU can read them more easily is the only kind of optimization worth spending time on.

There are a few programming languages that are ridiculously fast simply because they are so small they fully fit into L1 cache (Language itself, SQL engine, web-server takes ~200kb). There langues aren't even compiled, they *interpreters*, but they still are lightning fast because of memory optimisation beating stuff like MS SQL Server on test wrangling millions of records.

Another reason why you are wasting your time on trying to optimize code is OS, DirectX and drivers. Most of the time your game/software will spend doing OS calls not your logic.

Calculus II on the other hand...

>>337193483

>80 hr wool weeks
>game deva don't want you to go home

This is true. Epic Games had beds in their offices so programmers could put in long fucking days.
>>
>>337193415
You simply don't understand well enough. To know the path you must walk it with your feet and not your tires.
>>
>>337193742
i am the one repeating my point from prev. thread that low level assembly CODE optimization is completely irrelevant because of ridiculous number of layers abstraction already placed by both hardware (CPU decompiling into microcode, pipelines, branch predictions) and software (WinAPI, DirectX, drivers, VM) that make any attempt at low level optimization moot.

Optimization by memory MAYBE can give some results, but even that is not really viable in big projects.
>>
>>337194112
thanks, I'm the guy with the intern and I agree with that.

To add onto this circlejerk we're now having: Starting low level is an early optimization.

Grew up wanting to work in gaming production before learning what a harsh industry it was.

At least the indie market has more emphasis than it ever did.

Am I the one one who as a kid knew how shitty working in the games industry must be and always told people I wanted to make small 8-bit/16-bit games? (not even pseudo retro games I mean actual NES/SNES games)
I guess having autism has its advantages.

I'm not so sure about that, senpai. I missed my graduation in 2010 because I failed calc.

art
music
programming
R&D
advertising/PR

those are the five main ones

there's probably more depending on how big of a company you're working for

Imagine the skillset that one would acquire if it was their dream to make Hollywood movies. Now imagine that same skillset if it was acquired by someone who's ability was so poor, they couldn't get into Hollywood, the same place that lets hacks like Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan run around with $80 million budgets.

That and maybe a 12 week internship related to object oriented programming.

Youth, time, and mad programming skills. IMO, as someone who originally wanted to get a CS degree for vidya game making, the best way to get into the industry is to just make a fucking game for yourself.

Look at the cool shit obscure indie devs like Daniel Remar and Cactus made in their early days. It was something of a hobby for the both of them, a hobby that flowered into games like Iji and HM/HM2. Clearly, we don't need to work like we're in someone else's sweatshop to make something of merit.

FYI the reason I changed my mind about the vidya industry is because you're worked like a starving dog for shit pay/hours. It's a hypercompetitive field where everyone's playing for scraps -- except management, of course. Note how EA and other gaming companies tend to have very few, if any, employees over the age of 30.

i figured EA did, but i'm guessing this is because after 30 people tend to have families and can't bend the non-exempt and exempt line line they used to?
>>
>>337199056
That's a good reason, but the rabbit hole goes pretty deep on why there are so few old people. It's a fascinating enough subject that you should honestly read about it yourself and come to your own conclusions. I think it's the endgame of the media hyping up the programming industry as the second coming of Jesus.
>>
>>337192826
But they're not

Those of you fuckers saying you can't do math are doomed to fail. Nobody just "gets" math, you have to work at it for long periods of time in order to understand to concepts and utilize the tools. If you can't bring yourself to practice mathematics, what makes you think you'll be able to succeed in computer science, or any field for that matter?
