I can't figure out how in the heck have Myst - like games fallen off the radar and been replaced, in modern era, with impotent walking simulators of Chinese Room variety or even worse cheap knockoff of Android games that Jonathan Blow peddles.

Was it because no one can reach Cyan's artistic level? Were Japanese devs not interested in this? These sorts of spatial puzzles seem to be adjusted not only to high def gaming but also VR gimmick and no one even attempts to do them properly in any medium.

How are puzzle games coupled with outlandish art so scarce?

Yes, but that's not the point. The whole idea of 3D environment is that you can go around the object, look up, down, from all sides and gauge the area, then come up with the solution. The perspective is the gameplay, not the input / output, that part is the consequence.

Optimal way to do it would be to merge Myst puzzles with a game like pre-Pratchett spawn Tomb Raider and have demanding gameplay to boot.

Even smarter players HATE getting stuck on puzzles if they're not in the mood for it. It's a death sentence when you're competing for people's attention spans and they can just switch to another game or watch something on Netflix.

It's one of the reasons I'm glad The Witness is having success. Even if you think it's a lame collection of minigames, at least it's showing that there is an audience willing to sit and contemplate the screen for hours and poke around and get stuck on stuff.

Pretty much this. Myst and Riven were hyped as "experiences" more than anything. If you were going to need a CD-ROM drive anyway, why not pick up this Myst game that everyone's been talking about?

VR is a niche product so I don't think it can sell Myst-like games the same way CD-ROM drives did in the 90s.
