Is this series actually good? Uncharted 4 has been getting good reviews but I never played the Uncharted series. Would I start from the beginning or just go straight into 4?

I think a combination of the hype train, PS4's desperate lack of exclusives, Naughty Dog dick-sucking, and graphics obsession have propped up the review score considerably. In short looks boring as fuck.

the gunplay is mediocre, and that's the only time in the game where the player has some control.
The rest of the "gameplay" consists of pressing a button prompt when it shoes up to watch nathan get fucked anyway, but if you fail it he gets extra fucked.
in the vent you actually do like the gunplay, it'll be chopped up into small segments, surrounded by QTEs and pseudo gameplay consisting of more timed button prompts.

The Uncharted collection thing on PS4 is reasonably cheap and should give you an idea of what to expect from the franchise, I'd start with that. 2 is easily the best, 1 suffers from being a launch title and 3 from trying to be 2 again. 2 and 3 also feature a lot of things that come up in 4, 1 less so. I enjoy them for what they are and if you expect a fun linear TPS you shouldn't be disappointed. Uncharted 4 seems to be pretty good so far, I'm about halfway through it. Shooting mechanics feel a lot beefier and the AI is actually pretty decent now. It also looks absolutely stunning, especially for the hardware.

I just stole the cross from the auction and here are my feelings so far
- too many cutscenes
- too many QTEs
- absolutely fantastic graphics, best I've seen on a console
- near perfect animations
- once you get out of the cutscenes the combat is the best it's ever been. The physics are incredible and it's actually a lot of fun to shoot people and participate in gunfights.
If you own a PS4 you should get it, but I wouldn't say go buy a PS4 for the game. I definitely don't expect it to have the longevity of Bloodborne but it seems solid overall.

The game actually has a stealth system now. You can evade and re-hide once spotted too, it's not like the prior games where once spotted your position was always known to the AI. You're not going to be doing a no kill run but you have more flexibility than you did before.
its a themepark series. they have fun (if uninspired) storys. good characters, fun writing and banter. they look good and have a large attention to detail. their gameplay tends to be barebones and fairly mediocre for all of there systems and pretty much exist to setup the next linear setpeice sequence. there extremely shallow experiences overall, but if you want something equivalent to a shiny stupid summer blockbuster movie then you cant do much better. oh and pretty much all of their finale gameplay sequences are either mediocre or shit.
3 and 4 also have excruciatingly slow starts. takes fucking hours for the damn things to get going. kinda reminds me of TLoU in that regard.

That's a little bit disappointing.
I didn't like U3 at all. Got bored and dropped it at the floating crate area. U2 was amazing cause of its technical achievement. The set pieces and visuals and so on. U4 is a lot like U2. A few chapters in and it's kind of mind blowing how good it looks and how seamless all the animations are. Yea, gameplay is sparse. Lots of move here and click on item thing. Though, even those moments feel well done. Dunno. I haven't played a type of game like U4 in a while, so maybe it just seems fresh to me. But, wow. It's the best Tomb Raider series ever made and personally I love it. I'm on chapter 9 of the new one and so far so good.

To be honest I wasn't impressed when I played U2 when it first launched, my expectations were too high from the praise it got, sure at that time it released it was a technical achievement but the set pieces, animations & all felt too robotic to be enjoyed, & the pacing was just too fast.
U4's the first of the series where I'm really impressed, the amount of detail to everything, especially treasures are fucking good, wonder how it'll look like when patched with Neo.
This is easily the longest Uncharted game.
I am only at level 12 out of 23 and am 7 hours in. Playing on Hard. For reference I beat 1 and 3 in 7 hours on Crushing.

After Uncharted 3, the delays, and the writer for the Uncharted series leaving mid-development, I wasn't expecting much - but I'm absolutely blown away. It may be better than Uncharted 2.
The gunplay is excellent - the animations, mechanics, and everything are top-notch, definitely better than Max Payne 3 on PC.
I don't think I've seen a game look this good, either.

It does actually. It really does. The first 2 hours are kinda slow and heavy on narrative. Scotland is where stuff really gets going.
So far I like it. Pacing isn't quite as focused as 1 or 2, but better than 3. But the shooting and action arenas are definitely the best in the series, and the graphics are fantastic. They really draw me into the game and I just have to look (not explore) but look at the world, I'd keep playing just to see what comes next visually. But the gameplay is very good.

The series has good dialogue, atmosphere, and set pieces. The gameplay is pretty generic, but if your looking for a "movie you can play" it's pretty great. I'd recommend 1 2 and 4. 1 is pretty dated though so if you can't get in to it I'd try 2 before giving up.
3 is fine but character development wise it's just a re tread of 2. It was also made by a secondary team while the main one made Last of Us, so it's a step back from 2 in pretty much every way.

I got the Uncharted PS4 bundle. Played a few hours of 1 and thought it was dull as fuck. Gameplay was super straightforward platforming and boilerplate gunplay, nothing that hooked me at all. It practically plays itself. Writing was meh: okay for vidya but mediocre by any other standards. I don't see the point in slogging through boring writing if the gameplay isn't interesting.
