It's pretty shit, honestly. It has a lot of neat ideas and some tracks are really good, but the gameplay is awful. I had trouble beating it as a kid, but I had even more issue stomaching the first few sections before dropping it last year. The gameplay is very MMO-like with even less depth. You just wait while your character swings periodically, and maybe you can use a skill. They're really expensive, though, and the bar takes forever to fill between uses. You can even tell some parts of the game were rushed or ran out of budget. It's pretty telling that the Grasshopper company history art book only devotes a single footnote to the game – not even any art, despite it being okay.
I thought the references were okay, but the best parts of the game are the ending (which you can easily YouTube), the manual, and one track that goes on for 7 minutes, even though it only plays once, for like four lines of dialogue you can zip through in five seconds.
