>couch co-op
Why is this no longer a big feature? It was the main selling point for me when I was growing up, and it's still pretty fucking important now. Is everyone a shut-in these days, or are there still good games that you can play with friends without a mic? Pic unrelated.
>>
People wanted better grafics and online multiplayer was in higher demand. Consoles cant handle running 2+ instances of games at once without cutting down on grafics/resolution. So they cut the thing that most casuals don't give a shit about any more
At least we still have fighting games
>>

Oh it's a new game that just came out

Get a Nintendo system.
>>
>>337156963
Because 2 people were enjoying one copy of the game. That's like piracy anon. Don't you want the developer to get paid for their work you filthy criminal?

Theres still some games with couch co-op.
I know Battleborne, dead as it might be, includes it.

Heck, there's plenty of indies that have couch co-op and some of them are pretty good.
>>
You got a couple choices
Helljumpers
Earth Defense Force 4.1
2K games
Madden lol
Got helljumpers for Christmas but haven't played it yet. Might not be good enough for the elites online

>Is everyone a shut-in these days
I was always a friendless autistic fuck stick and I've definitely noticed the world has catered to me a lot more in the last decade or so.

t. wizard
>>
Do people actually hold the controller high in the air like that when they play? I always just rest it on my lap so my arms dont get tired
>>
>>337156963
Splitscreen worked better when graphics barely existed. Even on the bigger screens today there's too much shit on the screen to play comfortably. The last time I played co-op was halo 3 and it was shit, the field of view was so cramped I felt like I was wearing a cardboard box on my head trying to look out through the handle.
>>
>>337156963
why make big name AAA games have couch co op when they can make you and your friends each buy a copy instead of just one of you?

that being said, there are still some games that do it nowadays. most of them are downloadable sidescrollers.
>>
>>337158546
Very occasionally I will kind of jerk around and hold the controller farther or closer, but most of the time it's in my lap or resting somewhere.

That picture is the classic "pretend you're playing vidya" grip though.

>>
if you have friends you can play csgo, dota, wow with them online
considering how games get 100mil budgets they need to focus on 1 thing and not just pile on features
>>
>>337158546
shes posing for the camera. i dont think i know anyone who doesnt hold the controller either in their lap or hanging loose near their knees.
>>
>>337158657
This, and exactly this. Couch co-op or local play isn't dying, splitscreen is, there's a difference. It's harder and harder to make games splitscreen without serious sacrifices. So it's dying off in genres that need splitscreen, like FPS.

Local play is more alive than ever in fighting games.

Serious Sam series has split screen on PC.

>thread is about couch co-op
>talks about non couch co-op games
>>
>>337156963
I hate that so few games have it. When I have a pal over it's hard to find a good game to co-op for lengthy periods of time. Currently all I have is Blops3, Battlefront, and Rocket League, so really the only option is Rocket League and even that is only fun for so long.
>>
>>337159616
question: why isnt feature more common?
answer: people enjoy another feature more and its not worth it to include the other feature.
>>
Nintendo has a higher focus on couch co-op games
Sony has a higher focus on single player "cinematic experiences"
Microsoft has
>>
>>337158657
>>337159171
splitscreen always meant comprimises though. it's like you never played goldeneye or thps split screen. i kind of like how the lego games handles split screen. it's dynamic that if you are near each other it's a single screen with no split. if you move further apart it turns into split screen. that is it how it works right? i've only played once with my nephew.

Your options are sports games and Nintendo games. Ninty never really stopped making splitscreen multiplayer games. Hell, the only version of Shovel Knight that has multiplayer is the Wii U version. Me and my friends like other consoles more, but when we get together to game, it's always something on a ninty console.
>>
>>337159948
>Microsoft has
pc?
>>
>>337160098
Yea that's how it works

Toejam and Earl was the first to do that as far as I am aware.
>>
Gotta say, I've been couch co-oping on my Wii U for over 2 years now and it's a blast.
>>
>>337157730
This solves the problem, most nintendo games feature local co-op with the only big one I can think of that doesn't is Splatoon which I think would have been fun to do a local co-op online mode
>>
>>337160225
>Toejam and Earl

>>
>>337158546
I did once. It was kind of neat to watch my fingers in my peripheral vision while I played.
>>
>>337160098
The problem is that it has a much bigger impact now than it did back then. Even on rocket league PS4, you get FPS drops with 2 player splitscreen, and even worse as you go up to 3 and 4. That's not even talking about the resolution and field of view.

Barring certain games (lego I imagine really benefits from local play) just do away with splitscreen, it's just not worth it. I'm not saying drop local play, but I still have just as much fun with friends on the couch with games like NHL, Dragon's Crown and Helldivers.
>>
>>337159934
It isn't more common in most games because dev's don't want it to put strain on the console and suffer a performance drop.
>>
>>337160721
>ps4 can't handle rocket league

tell me you're memeing and sonyggers don't actually experience this.
>>
I really hate it when flocks of people demand online for games that really, really don't need it. Even shit like leaderboards. Nobody wants a self-contained game anymore. In 20 years I'll still be able to play my splitscreen games with friends because they don't require online services that'll be down by then.
>>
>>337162097
The truly sad part is most games don't even offer a local lan solution so you can't even go that route anymore
>>
>>337156963
>Is everyone a shut-in these days

Yeah pretty much, including me.
>>
>>337156963
Better yet, what the fuck happened to PC LAN games!

Excluding difficult to run older stuff, emulators, and janky mods. I'm pretty sure I've used up the whole PC gaming co-op catalog, especially when the common choices boil down to;
>First Person Shooters
>Third Person Shooters

One can only take so much of L4D, Borderlands, Portal, Littlebigplanet, Mario Kart, Minecraft etc.
>>
>borderlands
>terraria
>black ops
>dragons crown

And then there's smash. I really don't even buy games anymore, but when I do, it's something I can play co-op
>>
Back then online gaming wasn't as accessible as it is today. Couch coop was the determinant if you could play games with your friends.
>>
>>337156963
A better question is 2

Why the fuck don't modern consoles have 2 HDMI outputs for 2 player 2 screen action?"

(what's this copy code bullshit, BTW?)
>>
>>337165815
more sales
and they cant handle it.
>>
>>337165815
they could always do multi-out/hdmi you'd have to just drop the resolution
>>
I originally asked this question out of frustration. I like multiplayer, but I look through my PS4 library and there's hardly anything to play with someone at my house.
>>
>>337157487
This is not it

It's because it sells more consoles if people need to buy one in order to play along. That's it.
>>
>>337158816
it's James and Aleks ditching The Creatures to pull in even more jewdollars

Because then people wouldn't have to buy two copies of the same game and then subscribe to Xbox Live™ or PlayStation Plus™

I don't even know what kids do today.
Co-op or split screen was a requirement back in the day because I had a brother. N64 was great for that.

Today, outside of Nintendo, what is there?
>>
I've been seeing more PC couch co-op games recently.

Hook that rig up to the big screen, or pull another chair up to the desk.

>>
>>337169268
Basically that. Part of me wanted to go at the campaigns, but usually we were better of sharing rather than taking turns. Jetforce Gemini was a good compromise.
>>
I do; sole reason I buy consoles
>>
>>337169524
The opposite of me. I was a lil bitch who didn't like to share. But then we got ahold of Perfect Dark/GoldenEye/Mario Party/Smash/Conker's/Kart/Pokémon Stadium (minigames only). I want my console back.
>>
Theif Town and Duck Game are both 4 player local MP on PC.

4k grafix? No, probably not even 1k. That seems to matter less when you're having fun with friends.

Me too. I was lucky that my bro liked watching, because I didn't. At the end of the day, we always had an absolute blast playing together though. Especially if it was a game with bots and we could coordinate.

That is the most girly way to hold a controller. Every girl I've ever played games with holds their controller like this.

People realized splitscreen is fucking shit, and modern games can hardly support two players playing at the same time.

You can't sell your $9.99/month premium internet play service with couch co-op.

maybe the way shes holding it up. idk maybe girls dont remember the buttons.
>>
>>337170267
It's probably easier for them to look at the buttons and screen.
>>
>>337156963

Post more of this girl and her feet.

Also, serious sam, renegade ops, jamestown, hammerfight, every shmup, etc, all have couch coop in steam big picture mode on your tv, fgt.

Of course terraria, helldivers, shit like that are good on LAN, but I believe you're talking same-screen.

Yes I have been to places with two TVS and two PCs hooked into them for couch coop. And we played with controllers.

And I prefer kb&m of course.
