"Step by step TF2 will start looking more like the modern competitive title we all know it deserves to be"

"Can't share everything, but expect tons of rebalances and an update that is much bigger than just the competitive mode release."

"Had a great Valve visit. TF team is awesome and the things they are working on are awesome."

-b4nny

where were you when valve started saving tf2?

Honestly glad Blizzard released Overwatch.

Finally after years of being on the backburner, TF2 will stop getting shafted over CS:GO/dota2 as the go-to supported competitive title from valve.

In that case it's the lack of actual substantial updates (rip Soldier Vs. Demo etc. themes), merely stealing community items to SELL so on sv_pure you can't avoid seeing it, and most importantly the lack of players doing it in.

People can come back, if the population comes back, because they do something like update tc_hydro to not suck and release about 20 other maps in the same mode along with 3-4 team (+ VIP) modes

You're confusing a lucky acquisition of the LMAOBOX source code and the desperate attempt to monetize the competition scene with competence.

If you look at recent events, then you'll see that they're incompetent as ever. The reason they're still here is because the competition is non-existent.

with respect to dota 2 and league, the product speaks for itself, valve isnt threatened by league at all

but as for tf2, there are some glaring issues, and it just needs some love. TF2 is a diamond in the rough right now that just needs a little more polish to be relevant again

csgo is less competitive than 1.6 and far more casual. Not going to write all the issues cause I'm on my phone.
Dota 2 is icefrog. You can be sure if it was valve the game would be much, much worse.
TF2 was never competitive hence the massive changes they are apparently doing. But valve has never in their entire history made a game more competitive, only more casual so I have little hope.

You're a casual who has clearly never even tried to play any game at a high level.

I know, Riot actually did things while Valve just fucked around for ages. DOTA 2 was a success in spite of Valve not because of them.

My only complaint about TF2 being played competitively was the maps.
All maps were designed with 12v12 in mind so in 6v6 it took too much time to get to the point sometimes. If they re-design them a little bit by shrinking some areas in the competitive mode only it could be better than Overwatch

Yeah i'll still probably check it out. I'll admit I used to be a valvedrone but ever since the mannconomy update I grew less and less trusting of them and now barely trust them at all.

I loved TF2, I booted it up last year some time and the only servers that were populated were fucking Valve servers and skial, which aren't much better. All those great servers and great communities either empty or just gone.
>>
This game honestly run it's course. Valve killed it with the f2p cancer and the mannconomy tumor. It was screwed from start because I bet if mannconomy was not successful, they would have shelved TF2 years ago. I had so much fun with this game during the first few rears but the breaking point was when all the loyal fans got was a shitty hat and it opened the floodgates to f2p. Even if you played since the beta; here is your shitty hat. Was heart breaking.

>>
>>337139263
Team composition isn't a real gripe from TF2 players switching to OW or playing it on the side since most, if not all, of Invite-level players can play at least low-mid IM even with their worst 6s class. Ults. controlling the pace of the game is the real problem, and characters with really good Ults have their place as being top-tier set in stone and character that are great on paper with shitty/easily counterable Ults. (ie. Junkrat) will be doomed into the mid-tier limbo.

>>337139365
>Retarded comp rulesets even before weapon updates.
I don't have much of a problem with any of the banlists in comp TF2. HL blacklists are based around how much they fuck up the pace of the game or being disgustingly overpowered (crit a cola, Pomson Darwin's), along with action items that can freeze character models or have sound cues which would actually be disadvantageous to use. 6s bans are determined by how much they slow down the pacing of the game, unless you want a full time Engie throwing down minis in a 6v6 and making the lives of roamers even more of a living hell or running Machina Sniper and GRU Heavy to mid while being boosted by Disciplinary Action on Process.
>>
>>337139934
Your a fucking moron. The first wave of hats didn't break anything about the game. Over time they didn't care about the artstyle no more but the first few waves of hats we're nice cosmetics. The first wave of new weapons offered a different playstyle for the class you were playing as.

>>337140962
Everyone's a faggot about their class desu. I was a scout and solly player in 6s and other sollys were generally less faggy than other scouts though. Pyros are the worst though, they have one skill based thing about the class and act like it's the hardest to execute, most indepth mechanic ever invented.
>>
>>337140859
Not all the class updates were absolute trash. Although when the Backburner gave you +50 health and was powerful minus the airblast that promoted not learning airblast but W+M1, that was a shit week.

Or when Natasha brought your ass down to a snails crawl from halfway across Granery and if the Team was communicating and competent, you were just dead. That weapon was absolute no fun to Scouts and anyone. Krits Natasha was even worse because you couldn't even escape the ass beating.

Or how about when the Ambassador was a literal aimbot for the first few days? Or when the Dead Ringer in the hands of a competent Spy made him damn near unstoppable and you had to go to great lengths to rid yourself of that annoyance?

But as for the Scout... Yah. FaN helped you get to other places and blast people back, Bonk helped you get through defenses but I hates seeing 5+ of that class on every server

Keep in mind yeah, Dota is also free.
>>
I never really understood why Valve was so slow on supporting competitive TF2.

It probably has to do with what they said before, which is that they want to try "different approaches for different games so that that if one fails, the others don't fail too."

But that seems stupid to me. What component of TF2 would be damaged or jeopardized by the presence of a competitive mode and support? That's probably not the reason then, but I don't know what would be.

Valve loves inclusion and hates exclusion. By nature, competition is exclusionary. Valve has always hated competitive modes and are trying to get closer to blizzards level of casualization

Until Robin took over and they stopped caring for anything, they cared a lot about roles and things having purpose too, to the point Demoman no longer has a stack of dynamite and classes don't have grenades.

If they were competitive oriented however, spy wouldn't be useless and neither would pyro.

>Spy actually y'know spies
>Motion sensor alt to sapper in addition to surprise buttstabbing
>Can mark enemies so they're visible through walls, but they speak out loud so pyros can find them.

probably not
but it could be so great if they ever do
all the stupid fucking hats wiped away
the weapon loadout system integrated into the game from the start so instead of having a couple of viable sidegrades that change the playstyle of a class slightly and the rest is useless or gimmicky garbage that makes no fucking difference and all due to the reason that all the class interactions were designed and almost fully fleshed out before the new weapons, you could at the design stage of development stake out different sub-roles for each class and design alternate weapons to fill those roles (e.g demoman built around area denial vs demoman built around breaking fortifications vs a focus on something else) and have them be actual weapons that aren't just mediocre reskins of the originals with a twist
potential new mechanics like destructible terrain or 3+ teams
new spiffy graphics
less focus around explosives spam
better class balance and with better skill ceilings for them all

>>
>>337142567
Well golly that must be why the +50 health was still in the game

Having no airblast didn't fucking matter at the time because an overhealed pyro had over three hundred fucking health and the flamethrower did way more damage at the time and there weren't seven thousand fucking ways to extinguish fire at the time

A weapon that was made for getting behind enemies did not need HEALTH put onto it because all it did was just motivate people to retard-rush enemies with it. And it worked. Which is why it got removed.

Also, there's almost absolutely fucking nothing Spy can do if there's an even remotely competent pyro on the enemy team. He should be rewarded if he manages to outplay him and actually kill the engineer he's babysitting

If the only counter to it is 'suicide stab and get your team to clean it up while the engineers dead' then why even bother sapping in the first place

I don't care if a game is balanced as long as it's fun, but holy shit if you think that The Equalizer was anything other than a straight buff for the Soldier you're crazy.

>Well golly that must be why the +50 health was still in the game
The fuck are you talking about? The health thing was gone in less than a month after airblast was introduced.

>A weapon that was made for getting behind enemies did not need HEALTH put onto it because all it did was just motivate people to retard-rush enemies with it.
Right, but that's another topic entirely.

>Also, there's almost absolutely fucking nothing Spy can do if there's an even remotely competent pyro on the enemy team.
Maybe stop playing Spy, then. It's the worst class in the game for a reason.

>He should be rewarded if he manages to outplay him and actually kill the engineer he's babysitting
But you do get a reward, you chucklefuck. You killed two enemies and optionally sapped a nest. What more do you want, a hat?

>'suicide stab and get your team to clean it up while the engineers dead'
Sounds like teamwork to me. Why is this a bad thing, again?
>>
>>337143725

>>
>>337136438
He said Pyro was garbage. It's a class full of gimmicks that ends up filling a support role best because of how outclassed it is by demo soldier and scout in terms of offense.

The airblast mechanic is very poorly implemented since reflects can happen from just spamming it. Very little aim necessary.
>>
>>337144157
They did that because of all the rocket launchers they added and didn't want to balance them

I think it could, yes.
>>
>>337144481
By playing Pyro you are inherently shit though. You cannot do as much dmg, hold as much space, move around the map as much and as quickly as demo scout and soldier.

Airbase fire rates affect literally nothing. It's a bad class for new people to get a single kill with per life or for a brony to main.
>>
>>337145049
They buffed the airblast firerate so that it was faster than the rocket launcher, which completley changed the pyro vs soldier dynamic, it also made it much more affective at juggling ubers in the air.

I do agree that pyro is just a shit class though and you shouldn't play it.
>>
>>337144417
No, they fixed the absolutely abominable hit detection and damage falloff that the flamethrower originally had in the pyro update, before which the flamethrower basically shot orange clouds, but they overdid it so a single pixel of the fire could lick you and it basically did 80% of the damage of point blank

>>337144469
Overwatch looks nowhere near as bad as TF2. There are a couple of joke skins and similar, but they barely mess up the aesthetic, and generally look more coherent and well-made than anything in TF2. Some of the TF2 items are just fucking god awful looking, fucking bright pink mac earbuds with alien parasites and a an orgy of flying particle effects with the obnoxious "Fashion criminal is wearing the subhumans assblaster of retard quality" popup zooming onto your screen as soon as you die to someone are much, much worse than egyptian samus merely dressing like a feather indian. Overwatch items at least look like they were created by someone, TF2's shit only came about due to gross negligence and accumulation of stupid decisions.
>>
>>337144845
Don't get me wrong

I love playing Spy. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

But it's also not really worth playing him in almost every circumstance. The closest thing you can get to viable Spy is playing the dumb fucking DR/Amby loadout which is like playing half of a sniper with a tenth of the risk

Hell, I main pyro, honestly. And I just don't think sapper removal is a very good game mechanic because that's something that should be exclusive to engineer, like how lighting people on fire should be exclusive to pyro But they gave that to fucking soldier, albeit it's pretty shit but you get what I meant
>>
>>337145049
So... Pyro needs a buff?

I suggest:
- Flamethrowers all get a 50% range increase
- Pyro speed increase 10%
- Pyro health decrease to 150
- Flare gun damage increase 50%
- Flare gun firerate decrease 25%
- Flamethrowers can start ground fires which set you on fire and last 5 seconds, like the CS:GO molotov

Thoughts? I think it's a bit OP. How would (You) do it?

You're describing approx $50 of items on one character, which, while possible, isn't representative at all of the vast majority of players. Plus the combination would be made by someone with bad taste (or who did it to succesfully piss you off), which is something that the tf2 devs have 0% to do with

Increasing the speed and range would just make pyro very obnoxious, and it also starts encroaching on the scout's niche. Pyro's thing is to be devasating up close but with no real way to get there. Which just makes it shit against good players. Something llike >>337146137 would help while keeping it's role intact.

Valve needs to remove all the RNG in TF2.

>>
Post yfw TF2 is ported to Source 2.
>>
>>337146924
nah, in competitive, the shotguns don't have rng.
The pistols all have RNG after the first shot for around 1 second. This is so classes besides sniper cant snipe sentries.

You still can snipe sentries as scout, it's just you have to wait the reloading time between each shot.
>>
>>337146924
There is a server setting which causes shotguns to shoot in a 3x3 grid, removing all the rng.

>give longer range to demo

spy is used occassionally in competitive formats. A great play is:
>6v6
>disguise as friendly pyro/sniper
>show enemy team so they get scared
>back off and sneak, try to get medic.

spy is great for mindgames
>>
So they needed competition to make the game not terrible? I hate Valve so much
>>
>>337145870
I hate them all. My suggestions

-Reflect damage doesn't almost kill you instantly anymore. I don't even know why they thought this was a good idea.
-Revert the Axting nerfs. Powerjack was already the best choice since it got 10% movement while deployed, but the Axting nerfs only solidified PJ's dominance.
-Det jump self damage is lowered and a tad bit more height and distance on jumps and have the base damage be the same as the Flare Gun.
>Reserve Shooter should be allowed to minicrit on jumping targets again.
-Degreaser weapon switching attributes should be reversed (60% faster going off, 30% faster going back to)
>>
>>337146924
If they remove RNG on pistol and minigun people would just snipe across the map with them

>encroaching on the scout's niche
The real problem here is that they have the same damn niche. Scout is just better at it. Getting ambushed by any Pyro but the luckiest and most precise backburner is your cue to turn around and fuck them up. Getting hit by a full FaN is enough to ragdoll Soldiers, and of course Scouts have dramatically more mobility to get behind you and get back out.

That's why Pyro's gotten support class and defensive stuff when he didn't even have airblast at launch. They just don't know what else to do with him.
>>
>>337133182

I actually had an idea for a flamethrower with this gimmick once. It was going to be fashioned out of one of the rockets from Poopy Joe's. The gimmick was that airblast knockback was doubled (and double projectile speed), but also knocked you back for a regular airblast, depending on your trajectory.

Didn't think about stats, although +airblast ammo cost is a no brainer.

TF2 can't be 'saved' unless they gut it of all the utter shit low-quality content they added that turned the gamer trash. Game breadth does not make for a better game.

Also, fuck being a "modern competitive title". That's not what made TF2 fun in the first place. Besides, I doubt you can "balance" it in a way that doesn't make the Scout/Demoman/Soldier inherently overpowered.

Is arena still dead? I had so much fun with that around the time of the spy update.
>>
>>337151183
Okay, I don't think Valve would be willing to do the changes required to fix Demoman and Soldier.

I mean, fuck, they spent years randomly nerfing the Pyro. Remember the update when they nerfed it so much it dealt less damage than the fucking Medic?
>>
>>337151760
I started playing arena again on certain servers. But then there was a sniper and an engineer.

I now know why people dont play arena anymore.
>>
Snipers inherently make for a shitty gameplay experience for the other people playing, so there's no way to fix the sniper. That said, get rid of the fucking Razorback, at least then Spies/Snipers can just attack each other.

Similar, to a slightly lesser extent, for Spy. If it's easily possible to be a useful Spy then you're just annoying the fuck out of the other team, so you can't make it 'fair'. That said.

They've insisted on nerfing the Pyro into uselessness, because it's annoying spam class... even though it's supposed to be an annoying spam class.

Medic is basically fine, although it's probably too good of an offensive option with the blutsauger and ubersaw. Cutting the health (back?) down to 125 would probably be a good idea.

Demoman and Soldier are hugely overpowered and basically need to be fundamentally redesigned, something Valve will never do. Yes, they used to be worse, but that doesn't mean shit, aside from Valve being awful at balancing. Maybe splash damage is the best option.

Heavy is underpowered because there's basically no point playing it as an offensive class when you could play Demoman/Soldier and deal more damage while being less accurate and being faster and also have vertical movement options.

Scout feels slightly OP but I don't think there's any solution.
>>
>>337151856
Needle gun damage is still really good at close range. I bet it's still easy to backpeddle the poor fuckers to death with it.

No, Pyro needs a complete rework.
The class is fundamentally designed to be be amazing against newer players, since most have no idea how to handle a Pyro, but gets shit on by veteran and professional players because lack of range.
At it's core, you can be more efficient with the stock shotgun than you can with the flamethrower, as it takes a longer time than Heavy to kill with it at point blank, and relies on low damage afterburn (which does less per second than a cleaver's bleed) that can be countered by multiple sources in game as is.
Pyro's abilities, Spychecking, Afterburn immunity, and Airblasting projectiles also make it to where the class is dependent on a person playing as a certain class on the enemy team (Spy, another Pyro, being fed projectiles) to make the best use out of this, and if going up against another Pyro without a shotgun, the fight turns into "Who can M1 the best".
In 6s, Pyro suffers because he can get outplayed easily by two Scouts and lacks the mobility to get to mid quick enough without the aid of a Powerjack that can make Pyro even weaker, but Pyro is useful for denying Ubers when played on last.
In Highlander, Pyro's literally cucked and has to watch over the Med and the Engi. If he steps out of line, he can be headshotted or torn to shreds by the enemy team almost instantly.

It's hard doing redoing Pyro because a lot of proposed changes are dumb.
>Less health means it's squishier
>More speed means that it shits on Medic and M1 will be a bigger problem
>Longer flamethrower means that it's even easier to spam flames to hit people
>>
whats the point of a competetive game that has zero depth aside from "work with ur team"

tf2 is boring enough to play who the fuck is actually watching comp tf2
>>
>>337154496
The issue is that Valve nerfed the living fuck out of the Pyro's offensive abilities because they felt it was too easy and it annoyed them. The Pyro was basically fine originally and they literally turned it into a pointless non-viable class.
>>
>>337154496
A lot of people characterise the Heavy as the "safe, secure class that's forgiving to beginners but boring and limited for vets", but when I first entered the game I sucked with the Heavy and did best (ie did some damage and lasted more than fifteen seconds) with the Pyro. He doesn't require you to aim at all.

That said, I haven't played any Pyro since, and never learnt to airblast/reflect at all. Including gimmicks like this in the forgiving class strikes me as confused design, although it may be ergonomic for game-space to give this class more of a role at high end play.

Maybe the Pyro should function like a Red Mage in Final Fantasy. Swiss Army Knife of tricks, very forgiving early game, little development late game but still a reliable fallback.
>>
>>337138190
Not even new Doom forced Valve to make Half-Life. It's over. I honestly lost all hope and wish they would at least make a new Left 4 Dead.
>>
>>337154496

Buff range and afterburn damage.
SERIOUSLY chew ammo fast, way faster than anyone else. Everyone virtually never needs to get ammo except snipers maybe, especially with ammo pickups in most common camping spots. Pyro effectively will be bringing a tool like the medigun and sentry, and will spycheck by flooding rooms, but then run away to re-arm so they can't camp spots.

The rate they can get from dispensers would mean they stay on a dispenser or use sidearms while using them, and not roam.

To avoid pyro stacks, fire does not stack damage and direct damage is meaningless.
>>
>>337154496
>The class is fundamentally designed to be be amazing against newer players, but gets shit on by veteran and professional players
I know that's how Pyro plays, but was it really intentional? It's not like how Demo was supposed to be a defensive class but for years and years he was an amazing offensive DPS they only recently toned down?
