why not build a wall instead of staring at it. Anyway what games are you playing where it's so hard to learn all the moves? Games like Tekken and VF have very simple moves and then extensions to them. And you will narrow down what works as you play or watch other people play.
Games like SF already have the move lists narrowed down so it's already easier and you don't have to worry about moves that track left or right like in 3D fighters.
Pro players use pad just find so if you think a fight stick will make you good then think again. Just think of it as a luxury.

I tried playing Tekken tag the other day for the first time in like 13 years and I took one look at jack's move list and thought "fuck this". Its just kinda overwhelming. I don't know man, I really enjoyed fighting games as a kid it was my fav genre I would play everything and spend hours unlocking all the characters but as an adult I don't know if I can enjoy them the same. They seem to require a heavy amount of time input before you can get any enjoyment out of them and idk if it's worth it

All i know is Tekken and i can know at least 5 characters with varying degrees of knowledge. That doesn't mean i know 700 moves but instead i just narrowed down moves that work the best.
Just find out what moves work as good punishment against most other moves and your already on your way. Learning the exact move that has just the right amount of frames to punish another move is just silly. Keep it simple and you learn things by playing against the AI.
Keep in mind that you havent even tried.

make up some random combos for when you can use them.
Find your good punishers.

A lot of Tekken's movelist shows you combinations of shorter command moves, it's not as intimidating as it looks. I wish they would drop those 5-10 completely useless dial-a-combos they have at the end of every character's command list though, that shit actually is misleading for newcomers
