The increase in accessibility of games has been a thing basically since the late 1980s when Nintendo showed games could still be commercially viable. It's just that the mad dash to the bottom of the barrel accelerated since around 2000 and by 2007 when investors saw headlines like pic related, the big money jumped in full force and began the push to market games to everyone and anyone. I remember thinking something big was coming when I saw CoD4 ads in movies theaters.

I was going through my steam games recently to see what were the rarest achievements, and it was strange to see which games people finished vs which games people didn't seem to even start playing.
In some of their defense, some games didn't have achievements at launch (like HL2) so the ratio vs all players in terms of completion isn't correct. What you need to do is compare the % of the 1st progress achievement to the % of the end game progress achievement to get a better idea of how many people finished the game who picked it up after achievements were added.

After a certain amount of random reports nobody looks into, players end up in a place they can only fight other players that have been sent there. The disappearance of middle market, AA games. This started with the seventh generation. Before that, there were a ton of games from smaller dev team. That's where a lot of the variety and experimentation came from. It also meant shovelware was a bigger problem, but that was a small price to pay for the huge variety the climate allowed.
Now there's no middle ground anymore. There aren't really any games you just sort of come across by accident amidst the big budget releases, selling for $25 instead of $55, then you take it home and play it and say "That was fun. Not a huge blockbuster epic, but it had fun gameplay/an interesting style/an unexpectedly good story/etc. I'm glad I found this. It was a nice surprise."

And it's not just that quality has been reduced. There's also the fact that entire genres have all but gone extinct. Pic related is a AA futuristic racing game where you drive jet-powered motorcycles. It's fun, especially when you get to the higher levels and get upgrades that make your bike capable of going supersonic and making everything go in a kind of slow motion. A game like that wouldn't be made today.
Come to think of it, there are hardly any recent, non-indie games where you spend the entire game controlling some kind of vehicle. That alone locks out several genres, not just futuristic racers.

Bringing gaming into politics and politics into gaming. All this soul searching after gamergate. All of these dumb kids treating gaming like it was their religion. You can't help but laugh.
And at the end, it all comes down to identity. Why do "hardcore" gamers complain about casualization of mainstream games, but don't just ignore the mainstream and go off and play their own games? It's because they need to let everyone know how hardcore they are. It's their identity. Why do busybodies wring their hands over the fact that most gamers are male, as if a certain demographic not liking a thing is somehow a poor reflection of society? Because they are worried about how they look to the world. It's their identity. Why do people feel threatened that their subculture is going mainstream, even though gaming has been mainstream since the rise of the console market in the 70's? Because identity. Why do people have "wars" over consoles. Identity.
I'm not playing that dumb millenial identity game. Like 99% of the population, I have regular interaction with electronic games. But I'm not going to call myself a "gamer"

I'm gonna take a stab at this and say that women are just another side effect of the casualization of video games. Making it more accessible pushed it into the mainstream more than it ever was before, and as a result hooknose marketers began to target that sweet, sweet female demographic that had been lacking up until that point. Before you know it, every other girl you see on Facebook is "lol such a nerd XD" because they beat World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. after dying 32 times.
It's certainly true that a lot of them shit up the hobby in one form or another (usually by being a retarded SJW or attention whore or some combination of the two) but I don't think the blame rests squarely on their shoulders.
I don't think it's really possible to pin down what really made video games go to shit, but if you absolutely had to boil it down into one sweeping statement, (how's and why's aside) I would say going mainstream was the worst thing to happen to video games in the past decade. I don't think anyone would disagree with that assessment.
