If I had to choose an exception, Sengoku Rance would be it. The game play is legit good. Conquering Japan while recruiting and improving commanders is simple but fun. There's good amount of challenge and replayability. And it never feels like a grind, which is amazing for a jap game.

Q: Which game should I start out with first?
A: It is not necessary to start from the beginning and games could be done in any order.
However it is suggest that you should either start with Sengoku, as the best currently translated game and then go to the start or start straight from the beginning. Fortunately Sengoku's storyline is largely standalone with references to the previous games.
Rance I may not be worth playing but there is a translated digest version which covers the important parts. Then play Rance 02, Rance III, Rance IV and Rance 4.1 and 4.2. Kichikuou Rance follows the plots from Rance 1 to 4.2 and you may want to have played the earlier games as it could enhance the enjoyment of the series but it is still worth playing on it's own.
