It's worth giving a shot at least. The CG is super dated at first, but it gets better (unfortunately the direction gets worse in the later series). The writing is serviceable and the characters are charming but it definitely falters from a lack of long-term story planning as the series goes on.
I know I'm gonna get crucified here for this, but GRID2 has absolutely the best feeling sense of steering out of all games that I played. Cars are controllable but still feel powerful, on an arcade to sim range its roughly a 5. Not talking about the drift mode but just general car handling. I have never felt such satisfying sliding around the corners. GRID1 is objectively a better simcade but its just not fucking fun.

I'm not sure about the opinions, but Initial D: Special Stage and Need for Speed: Underground 2 are pretty good racing games on the PS2. Albeit, you can't go wrong with most Wipeout games.

Depends on the game type.
Arcade ones generally let you get away with simpler inputs like keyboards, gamepads....making dirfting easy to control and initiate.
Simulator racing games usually take far more advantage of the wheel, pedals, shifter.
My advice is to get a cheap wheel and pedals and try out arcade games with it.
It's far more fun to rotate a wheel and press pedals than pressing couple of buttons.
If you are set on playing simulator I suggest a good good setup with wheel, pedals with clutch, and H shifter.
Simcade is in the middle ground between both.

GTA San Andreas is my favorite drift game. You can get a Mt Akina MOD for it that's fun but Elegy and NOS make for infinite drifts.
DiRT Rally is also very fun for drifting, since it's all about sliding corners tighter than a newborn infants sphincter.
