They're there to support Sora. Donald can heal you, Goofy can block enemy attacks and keep them stunlocked, and both of them are necessary to access Limits, Summons, and Drives.
Just because you can't hang back and let them do all the fighting like in KH1 doesn't mean they're useless. They're a significant part of Sora's toolkit, and things get way more tense when they aren't around.
