It's not. Why the fuck would you owe journalists advance copies and the power to utterly rek your product's future with a scathing review? Arguments like "devs should always allow early reviews in the interest of informing consumers" are bunk, as reviewers who disagree to it can just wait for the game to come out like everyone else (and consumers who are unsure can wait the like, extra day or two it would take after launch to read a professional review for the game)
You agree to it, you get your advance copy and a review embargo. This new Doom is a divisive game, and a new entry in a classic series and the MP part already got a lot of shit on PC, so this is probably why Bethesda is doing it. I hate to be the "corporate whore" but this is such an easy situation to circumvent I feel ridiculous even answering it - DON'T PREORDER, DON'T BUY SHIT DAY 1 EVER

For MP, late adopters typically have a harder time. Especially if like a year has passed, in which case the remaining community will invariably be hardcore

Work through your backlog for a year, then play games a year after their launch. They're patched and normally fully functioning with no game breaking bugs and all the DLC for them is normally out by then.
