I think one of the parts thattriggersa lot of /v/ is the laughing scene, but that's like 5 seconds in a game many hours long.
Blitzball is a fun mini game but I preferred the card games from VIII and IX. Some of the other mini games are decent too.
One of the main annoying parts if you're a completionist might be getting the legendary weapons, not going to spoil but some of them are pretty annoying and it's possible to miss a few if I remember correctly. You can still get some of the good ones late in the game even if you've missed everything though.
Worth playing if you're a fan of FF or jrpgs in general, don't let /v/ make your opinions for you. It was popular for a reason.

Despite both sides of the fence using the term, the argument has never truly been about linearity. The Tube just exacerbates the issue of there being no side activity of any sort in XIII. The reason monster hunting doesn't work in its favor is because the entire game is paced like a shooter. You kill monsters, move forward, receive cutscene, repeat. Monster hunting rewards a player at the end of a game loaded with nothing but monster killing with more monster killing.
In FFX the pacing is granted a few moments of reprieve with activities outside killing and it makes all the difference. With these small breaks in action, monster hunting at the end becomes far more welcome.
