Sure, I played Half-Life 1&2, a bit TF2 and CS but nothing else really and I've been wondering about good FPS games/series for a while now

If you are talking multiplayer, the older cods were good fun. Zombies was also good.
Halo's multiplayer was also fun, mainly because of custom games.
Both are dead now.
If you are talking singleplayer... very few have any real replay value. And most of the good ones are short as fuck.
Bioshock is popular but I hated it.

The harder difficulty, the more tasks in each level you have to do, and of course added difficulty.
You can take it slow and stealthy, or run and gun. And, as always, better with a friend as it does offer full campaign split screen, and does scale with added help.

Never knew that. It's a good incentive to give the harder difficulties a try. I don't know why I never played it before, I see it on every "best of GameCube" list every time without fail.
The only FPS games I have ever beaten are MOHAA and Bioshock, and I didn't like either. When I was young I used to force myself to complete games, I don't know why.
Insurgency, rainbow siege, dirty bomb are all great new ish fps.

Far Cry games are pretty fun, 1 has some great AI and map design for its day and is a fun ride all around despite the abysmal mandatory quicksave system. FC2 has amazing atmosphere and a solid story but the gunplay is (even if intentionally so) not all that satisfying. I'd recommend playing on Hardcore with Dylan's Realism Mod for the optimal "fuck off whitey" experience. FC3 is a dumb, easy, but fun ride with some crispy gunplay and satisfying stealth (but again, play it on the hardest difficulty). Blood Dragon is a lighthearted parody of 80s action movies that can be beaten in about the runtime of one. Faster paced but even easier. FC4 is nothing more than "FC3 but better", don't bother unless you really liked it's predecessor. Don't play Primal at all.

It's fucking great, though. Some of the most precise aiming in any game ever, and it's quick pace is reminiscent of the good ol' days of late 90's FPS. If it had rocket jumping and proper bunnyhopping, it would be as fast paced as Quake.
Splatoon is the only good multiplayer shooter game to come out since TF2, which was 8 years old when Splatoon came out.

No it wasn't, it was a mess. They changed the jump height and walkspeed for no fucking reason at all, forcing you to sprint crouch jump sometimes. The normal jump is completely useless. The AI is literal artificial difficulty, they have 100% accuracy with submachineguns fired across the map and can tell where you are before they see you, there was a webm showing this, wish I had saved it.
Yes I could change the fucking game to fix jump and movement by editing shit in the console because the modders are fucking morons, but I would rather play the original than fix a shit mod.

It's a beautiful game that is rich with detail and offers a fun challenge, unless you're really bad. I loved seeing all my favorite maps recreated and reimagined with new detail. I don't care about mechanical changes because while HL1 was a decent FPS, it wasn't anything special in that regard to me. BM even improves here somewhat by adding fun setpiece fights like in the end of QE or in the beginning of LC.
And AGAIN, the AI was completely rewritten for Steam version. It's different from 2011 free mod version. I heard it made the game easier though. Haven't tried it myself yet.
