I used to lag so bad on Counter-Strike:Source, I did the invisible gun models, and modded some of the maps I got frame drops in to be the texture skin they use in those one maps, then I made the T's a bright red, and the CT's a bright blue.
I think I saw an increase from 4-5 FPS in some areas of maps, to never going under 20.
Keep in mind, I had less than 500 MB of RAM, and running an Nvidia onboard 6100 video card.

Right now? It's going to be really dead for all the non-endgame content, you will only find a few people joining your battles until about level 60. However, there's a new character coming out this summer, so that would be the best time to check out the game while everyone makes their new characters.
The combat is hands down the best you'll (probably ever) see in an MMO, and the bosses are very well designed overall. The game really shines in the 8 man raids, which is the direction it shifts to at around level 60, if you can stick through the copy pasted dungeons to get there.
If you're still interested in playing, there's a /v/ guild on both the east and west NA servers, east is pretty dead at the moment but will likely stay active again for a while with the new character release.
