I leveled a character to like level 30 or 40 on a vanilla private server like 5 years ago. It was fun enough.
Now I'm playing the official game. The only time I'm in danger is when I pull 5 mobs at once. I level out of zones faster than I can finish the zone storylines. Dungeons are so easy that it feels like I'm cheating. I play a DPS and I literally do not do ANYTHING in the dungeons. It's all the tank and the healer. I'm just along for the ride. I don't use over half my skills because I kill every enemy in 3-4 hits.
How did it get to this point?

I play on the Spanish realms and never realized how big of an issue this is in the English zone. In our realms we only get matched with the other Spanish realms and it's fairly common to meet people you have seen in Stormshield or from guilds you have heard about. Even our trade chat has the same "memers" all day, so I thought people were blowing this out of proportion. When you level a character in our realms you usually meet the same people in LFG all the time while leveling since there's no more than 3 low level LFG groups at the same time.
But then I made a character on a high pop English realm and while I appreciate the much shorter queues for low level dungeons, it's ridiculously different, the trade chats are spamfests of boost sales, I never meet the same people in LFG, it really does detract a bit from the experience.

WoW always fostered anti-social behavior since vanilla. It's part of the themepark genre. You never have to group up for quests aside from instances and once in awhile elite quests, you can practically solo everything on some classes.

Well no tank damage on the alpha isn't demonstrably higher then normal and right now all tanks have to do is hope the healer isn't afk because you have 0 chance of surviving right now.

Well to begin with, you could only go Shockadin with the T2 set in Vanilla. Spell damage plate wasn't exactly common.
It was also purely a PvP spec.. of course, so was Retardin. So for party play, at least a Shockadin could heal effectively.

you might want to check out a combination of soulforge for the (4) set bonus with maybe (3) from field marshal and the (2) set bonus from tier 3 redemption. one of those pieces would need to be the ring though and i think you're forced to wear two blues but it's technically an optimal combination for spell dmg
as for trinkets the AQ40 meteor and maybe a darkmoon card maelstrom?
as for weapons i wonder if thunderfury would scale it's nature damage i'm not sure
if not that try sageblade or runesword of the red or even azure song mageblade
and a good shield is something like force reactive disk although you would need to repair it a lot

The thing is, there wasn't any holy damage resistance gear and it went through armor so it hurt

Mounts and achievs aren't character based anymore. Patches are basically non-existent.
The thing is, when everyone's overpowered, people complain but people have a lot of fun.
The whole thing feels off the rails. Sure the Mage can POM PYRO and one hit you, but you can psychic scream and dispell his presence of mind.
Diablo 2 did this well, the spells scaled to points where they were literally OP as shit, but everyone had their own flavour of it, and it was extremely fun.

This kind of shit makes the game 'fun'. It really does. Sure it causes a lot of complaints, "oh that's bullshit etc", but if your class can do something equally fucked up, it's all good.
What they've done now though is tone everything down to 'moderation'. Nothing crazy at all can ever happen, you can't do anything special or interesting. The numbers are crazy, but everyone does a 'moderate' amount of damage to everyone else...
The CC's are all moderate duration of moderate usefulness.
The PVP goes on for a moderate duration, with a moderate amount of fun being had.

It's always been the problem with WoW, even in Vanilla. But the game was so 'loosely' designed that these kinds of things 'evolved' in the game.
