What's wrong with playing as a human in RPGs that let you chose your race?
Usually no decent racial bonuses.
Beyond that, why wouldn't you play as something other than a human when you have the chance? You spend 24 hours a day as a human, why not spend a few being something else?

Nothing wrong with it. Personally though, I like to play weird stuff because most games force you into being human anyway, and it's rare to be given the option to be anything else, and even rarer for something that actually looks nothing like a human.

Gnomes are stocky, smart and like inventing things.
Halflings are more nimble and agile and like enjoying life like LotR hobbits.
I usually go with the elf races in games but the appeal of humans is there, they're usually the hardy explorer types of their world and it inspires the teenager inside me, the idea of being a normal human travelling in a fantastical new world with magical races.
I usually play as humans since most RPGs that have race selection tend to favor humans in their storyline.

I play plenty of humans in all my other games. I want to freshen things up and play like an animal person.

Nothing, really. I have no problems with people who pick human. The closest thing to a wrong choice is elves or the furry race, but even then whatever. I personally like playing monster races when available, or dwarves when not.

You either play an RPG to play a role you'd never fit or that you do fit, but blown out of proportion/hyperbolic. I tend to play uncommon things, like Half-Orc/Orc Sorcerors or an Elven Anti-Paladin, stuff like that. As tumblerina as it sounds, challenging stereotypes is kind of fun in fantasy.

I consider beast races like Khajiit or Charr to be just another part of fantasy like elves or dwarves or orcs. They are all equally fantasy and it doesn't matter what you choose to play.

Game called allods, was pretty much a wow clone that (admittedy) had a few neat concepts, but nowhere near enough to make it fun after the first hour.
The race was interesting because it was three little gnome rat things, but they acted as one for attack animations and stuff, jumping on eachothers shoulder and swinging by their ankles for meelee attacks, etc. You could customize and name each one individually even.

Gnomes are to Elves as Halflings are to Humans.
Gnomes are basically just tiny Elves with a dash of dwarf thrown in to make them tinkers. They tend to be magical in nature.
Halflings are more down to earth, and generally less magical than gnomes.
I'd invite a halfling to a party, but not a gnome. I feel like the Halfling would bring some nice booze or tasty homemade party snacks, while a Gnome would spike the punch and break a window with his magical automatic corkscrew dildo or whatever.
As a /tg/ nerd who occasionally DMs a tabletop game, I don't really know what to do with gnomes. There's already so many midget races, and Gnomes really are the least interesting to me. I'd much rather have Goblins be me go-to Tinker race, because a lot of the things they invent tend to explode, sometimes on purpose.

My cleric dwarf only hated people who didn't drink or didn't let me drink. I remember a part of our campaign we rolled for loot and found a flask of never ending liquor. I threatened to kill our paladin until he handed it over.
Issue I find with any game after Phantasy Star Online is the lack of radical stat differences among races. Even special skills and abilities among certain races have been wiped.What's the point in being a space elf or robutt when humans can excel in all the stats the former can? Humans end up edging out other races in customization so there's really no point in picking anything else.
