The first one (Air Combat) probably not worth the effort, Ace Combat 2 is a bit dated but still fun. Ace Combat 3 is a weird one, real interesting. The PS2 titles are all golden, Ace Combat 6 is alright - more of the same but not on the level of the PS2 titles.
Only play Assault Horizon if you're DESPERATE for more similar gameplay. Its not an awful game in its own right, I suppose, but its an awful Ace Combat game, if you know what I mean.

To be honest though, I thought the bigger operations did more harm than good. There were so few missions from memory, it really lacked a lot of the variety in missions the older games had, and they went on for so long as well.

PS1 is pretty basic. AC4 was the real turn in the series, first of the "Holy Trinity". Don't play NA AC3 unless really curious.
Assault Horizon HD is hot garbage. For one, it wasn't done by Project Aces. Because of that, it tried to aim at an American audience (at the time,COD MW2 was out) and failed miserably. Think of it this way: Assault Horizon HD is to the franchise what Shadow the Hedgehog is to the Sonic franchise; a failed marketing ploy.
However, Assault Horizon Legacy on the 3DS is completely fine. It's a remake of AC2. Shame it had the AH name attached to it.

AH us a perfectly serviceable game that doesn't warranty a "don't play" recommendation. There are certainly terrible aspects about it, some forced DFM and the helicopter missions, but at is still a decent game. Sure, it's something you might want to play last, as mentioned, but it is hardly a bad game unless you're a massive acefag that probably shits on games like HAWX (the second game was sort of bad) or other flight games like Blazing Angels.

Not really. There's some repetition to it, to be sure, but a large part of the enjoyment comes from all the challenges you face when traveling to a dungeon and confronting new obstacles. The game is about item management and preparation, and it pushes the player to learn how to best handle enemies who are far above one's own level. Plus there's so much story focus that any amount of monotony that might be gained is avoided thanks to a constantly moving story with new events continuously happening and new dungeons to go to. REAL Pokemon games are more monotonous, since there's never any sense of challenge or need for thought to be put into the games to win.

You say this in an Ace Combat thread, where one of the appeals is the strong hype story of these games full of cool over-the-top scifi moments and mysteries and stuff. Games are pieces of media that have a combination of other elements to them; movies tell stories, music can tell stories...and so on. And they can add to it. Context added to the events of a game can make a game more enjoyable, giving meaning to what you're doing and reason for transitions between places. Context can help determine whether a boss fight is hype or not, and so on. In some ways story can directly complement gameplay, since context can determine how excited you are to do something in a game (like if a game made you want to kill a boss more than simply being a boss to beat).
I'm not saying story is the only thing that's important, but it can help make a good game better.

I've never played Uncharted. I'm not attempting to make such an argument. I just argued that having some level of story focus isn't a bad thing, and you disagreed. There's not much left to discuss.
I will say that I personally find Ace Combat games to be frustratingly difficult, and that lock-on still requires you to be aiming at your enemies and keep track of them in order to work, which is difficult when fighting enemies that move through the air at high speeds and when you can't turn on a dime. A lot of story stuff happens outside of cutscenes, with characters talking as you do the gameplay and story events happening in relation to what you're doing/seeing on the screen, so they don't detract from the gameplay since you'll still be doing your air combat all the while.
