Two games I highly recommend.
Got one a bit over two years now, got these games plus Project Diva F2nd, Superbeat Xonic and Ar Nosurge Plus.
It's not a bad handheld, has some good games. If I had to choose between the 3DS and the Vita, I'd go with the 3DS but that's just because I love Monster Hunter and Etrian Odyssey.
I really enjoyed Soul Sacrifice Delta, Wipeout, Muramasa and the rhythm games. One I still regret getting is Freedom Wars, that was a huge disappointment.

That is entirely on Sony. They abandoned the Vita too quickly, I'm sure it was a financial matter, and a gamble was necessary for success. But due to the rocky status Sony was already currently in, they couldn't risk it.
I can't blame them. I'm not happy about, but I would rather have Sony than a Vita with a few more non-weeb good games. I think we all would rather have it that way.
I have a vita. I don't play it much anymore, I played everything I wanted out of it, I like Dungeon crawlers, but to be frank, they're all just a bit too weeb for my tastes, with too much fanservice to a point it gets annoying. There's not much in the way of action games, which is disappointing cause killzone was really fun, EDF is fun too, the monhun clones are alright, but all moving to console. The resistance game was alright too I guess.
There's just not enough of a variety. It's very settled in it's dungeon crawler niche right now.
Also the obvious, mem cards are ridiculously expensive, and will never go down because they're exclusive to vita and china won't bother making memcards just for one device.

I have the slim. The screen is not as beautiful, but the design feels better in my hands. You also get a little extra battery life. Being newer, I would also say depending on how much you use it the hardware will have a longer life than that of a used V1.
As far as physical copies, that is entirely up to you. Do you want a physical collection? If so, go physical whenever you can. A few games can be pricey when it comes to physical copies as it is already. It ultimately comes down to if you want to own a physical copy of -that- game.
Gravity Rush.
A rhythm game, HMiku, Xonix, P4DAN, your choice.
Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters is my personal recommendation. It is not for every one. But if you like strategy games you will like it.

The last time I touched my Vita was for the disappointment that was Dancing All Night.
It's a fantastic device with a lot of right things, but the memory cards coupled with a library that's mostly just Neptunia ports really killed it. I tried as hard as I could to get a lot of miles out of it. I really did.

I just got unlucky I guess, I'm not blaming the model. I had it for a while and for some reason the battery just wouldn't charge. The meter would accurately show how much life it had but something must have gone wrong internally. I tried replacing the battery, replacing the charger cable and nothing worked. It would take nearly 24 hours to get a full charge from about 30%. I just traded it in at Gamestop and didn't tell them.

It's enough if you are willing to have to delete and download games, I believe you lose all save files if you do that though, hopefully someone can confirm. You back up your games to your PC and it ties the game to the save so you can safely delete from your card, thought the process isn't as fast as it should be.
You can also back up your saves to Cloud Storage if you have PS+, but you still need to download the game when you want to use it again.
I have a 64gig so I don't have to worry about it too much but honestly I could live with 32 or even 16 because I'm never playing anymore than 4 games at a time anyway.

IFI taking a chance with Neptunia made other companies feel safer with a PC release, though the fact they're not making any more money off of the original Vita titles can also be a deciding factor. (No more physical copies being printed, low digital sales unless it's $5)

They set too high of an entry cost ($310 for Wifi+4GB+Game, $360 for the 3G model) in the same time frame that Nintendo did a drop to $169.99 ($209.99 for system + game) THEN they made the mistake of not making the $189.99 Amazon Black Friday bundle the new price. I got a Vita a year ago. Since then I've played more games on it than my PC or 3DS by quite a long way.
As for games, I'd steer clear of the dungeon crawlers unless you're really really into that kind of thing. Experience Inc. don't make quality games.
The best hidden gem type game on the system is Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines. Opinions on it seem to vary quite a lot. Some people say it's utter shit. But honestly, if you give it a chance and get to understand the mechanics, it becomes ultra-addictive and fun. It has simple turn-based JRPG combat but the main gameplay feature that makes it fun is managing your clan. It has a lot of replay value because each time you start, your clan can end up being really different in appearance, stats and personalities. The game has so much depth. It's just awkward and weird to play at first so it puts a lot of people off.

I've got a PS Vita and a PSTV and I love both of them.
That D-Pad in particular is amazing and I love the OLED screen.
I intended on mainly using the PSTV as a way to play local multiplayer in certain games without having to fork out for a whole second Vita and copy of the game but I mainly use it for playing PSOne Classics and PSP Games on my TV. I love it.
If I can just get a Vita TV hacked to play PS One games and PSP games as easy a PSP could, I'd never unhook my PSTV at all.

Have a 1000 model that I bought mostly for Disgaea games. Other than that, enjoyed playing Isaac Rebirth on it a lot, and Hot Shots Golf even though I got it pretty late and multiplayer is dead for that game now. Also have Meruru+ on it.
My only complaints are the cost of memory cards, and the battery life which seems short for a handheld. Considering getting a slim model since I heard the battery on that one lasts much longer, and I'm not really that picky regarding image quality.

Risk of Rain's online is shitty compared to PC.
It's two players only on Vita (PS4 can only have 4 people if two people are playing locally on both consoles) and it desyncs and disconnects like crazy even when both players have a good connection.
Single player works better because it doesn't crash the game with certain item during late game.
It bends like crazy but it doesn't actually break.

I had a PSP, and I wanted a vita, but there were never sequels to any of the games I enjoyed on the system. No Loco Roco, No syphon Filter, No pursuit force, No Baito Hell it was a complete handheld altogether from my perspective. Did it ever get another Monster Hunter?
