I never said he was deep, in fact he is supposed to have fairly obvious motivators. What I mean is that his actions are varied. One liners, various actions he makes, witty comments, intelligence, his subtle signs of respect, and even just his general attitude. He is himself. He chucks out generic one liners that have little to nothing to do with a specific context, he is written to have a "devil may care" attitude but the exposition completely contradicts that (which is a cheap way to characterize), he is condescending towards EVERY character in the game, including Kat and Vergil, etc. Hell the game even makes it a point to blantantly let you know that Dante has a big dick (then there is the dick measuring dialogue), which there is absolutely no point to. It is all a feeble attempt to built a character who projects confidence, rather than built a character who is actually confident.

Anyway, cringe or not, the gameplay in the Devil May Cry games is good enough to compensate for cheesy writing and characters, so that helps a lot, and it's part of the reason the character is liked.

How about maybe the fact that he was young? DMC1 Dante wasn't a total goofball but he had some cheeky confidence to him. DMC3 took place when he was just getting his start so with the younger age came a wilder and more cocky attitude because he hadn't grown the fuck up yet. DMC4 is like a mix of 1 and 3. He's still pretty cheeky but his wild attitude is toned down significantly. I can't really justify any good lore reasons as to why he's gone back to being a super dork in 4 but at far as marketing the character goes, they saw that people responded well with his DMC3 personality so they decided to work more off of that than his more somber DMC1 personality.

Yes he is and he completely stole the show and made Nero look like shit once he appeared. The fact that Dante finished all the bosses off and Nero technically didn't even kill a single one makes it even worse. Nero could be not in the story at all and nothing would have changed. His appearance is completely trivial since he didn't accomplish shit. That only enhances how bad the overall story is.
Also since the game has literally no atmosphere there wasn't any need for any lightening up.

DMC4's story is something of a mess, yes, but story isn't really the big draw of DMC anyways.
Nero provided a character that was easier to handle than Dante, while having a neat gimmick with his grabby hand, his yamato stand DT, and the sword revving stuff.
Dante is around to bring his gameplay back to the series, except now his flexibility and potential in combat is increased radically by the ability to swap between his DMC3 styles on the fly.
Nero never kills his bosses so that the player can fight them later as Dante, since from what I understand, the second half of the game was rushed as fuck and they couldn't make a second set of bosses and levels just for him.
