Really, physical collections are fine, but when shit is so ridiculously priced for no good reason, I just don't understand it. The game is fun, but it's not a masterpiece as everyone claims it (mother 3 is far better), and frankly the batteries are probably fucking dead in half of the carts out there.

in the mid 2000s retro games were considered junk and you could walk into any used media store / flea market, and walk out with a box of em for $20

what happened in 2007-2009 to turn the scene into a collectathon?

also, why the fuck are n64, gamecube, and even wii first-party titles still selling for $50+?? The only reason anybody bought those consoles was to play Nintendo first-party games, so it stands to reason those games are by far the most common. I'm not going to shell out $70 for SSB Melee or F-Zero

If you ever find yourself in a situation like OPs, find find someone that shops there frequently. They usually have a calendar from them, and those are filled with 50-75% off coupons. They work with games and DVD/blu rays too.

There is plenty of supply for these games, far rarer ones go for less money. It is just millenials trying to reclaim their childhood since they can't actually afford to buy any adult things like houses or cars.

People that played them back then got older, and chase after their childhood with their extra money instead of starting new families.

I once made a reproduction label of trip world and glued it on a tamagochi game. Sold it to a guy who had scammed a friend of mine and got his money back.
Who knew that by just placing it on a nice plastic bag and sealing it would be enough to make the guy buy the game without even testing.

He deserved it.

I have a near mint copy with case and manual, tried to trade it to a local game store, they were gonna give me $7, I pulled up ebay and showed them 8 auctions for the same quality shit with all the stuff included for 40 and 50 bucks. I know they have to make a profit but fucking christ, no wonder game stores are going down the shitter.
>>
>>336939934
"nerd culture" had a massive boom and people started selling these games for extravagant prices on ebay, it took another year or two for thrift stores to start doing the same when the mass amount of news stories started talking about it, id give it a decade or so when video games start to simmer out again, then all these games people paid thousands for will be worth 20-30.

They also had a lot of "brand new!!" copies of PS1 games like Crash and Spyro that were priced at $100+. Why do all these shit resell places base their prices off what people think they'll sell for on ebay?

I've noticed on Amazon they have gone from 250+ to now around $170 at it's lowest so who knows. I bet that won't last though. The lowest priced ones would most likely look like total dogshit.
>>
>>336942820
Nope, they'll only get higher as more people buy them and never re-sell or trade them on. Then take into account that carts, on average, are well over 20 years old at this point so a ton of them are going to start coming to the end of their life or in need of a repair and then also take into account people are salvaging games to make repros.

Anyone paying that much money for ANY game is a moron but hey it's their money.

>>
>>336942821
I kind of disagree. They had a few Qanba fight sticks for the same price as if you bought them from EightArc themselves. Of course, the advantage is that you don't pay or wait for shipping. They might've been used but they sure looked like they were in great condition.

I've bought several games from there and they were all either at or below Amazon's prices. I have no complaints, except for my copy of Bowser's Inside Story which had pencil writing throughout the instruction booklet but I guess I should've checked first. That being said though, I don't bother looking at anything SNES and Genesis or older and I will say that their N64 prices are generally way too high. That's about it though. They need better fucking AC in that place too.

I've been to New York twice and that place, Nintendo World Store, and this other small video game store run by Chinese guys are all top notch places to visit. It sucks living in a podunk town in South Florida where GameStop and BestBuy and other major chains are my only in store options.

1 is ass with no solid storytelling and a "here go wherever you want have fun having to backtrack a billion times till you find the right order :^)" 2 is fine but it's just that, fine, bland and generic with no interesting storytelling devices (besides the whole giegue is a monster woah so dark and twisted shit which is just as prevalent as EBZ and not a lick more). 3 is far from a great game but it's still leaps and bounds better than 1 and 2. It has a coherent story, the characters actually develop through the story, the gameplay is SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER HOLY SHIT, and best of all there's a real threat that isn't a fucking alien copout.

The amount of games they can't play is small and most of them aren't in short supply and can be picked up for reasonable prices, other than one or two.

I bought an Everdrive N8 & Ever MegaDrive not too long ago and it's been great. FDS for the N8 isn't fantastic but it's a hell of a lot better than paying the extortionate prices for games like Gimmick.

I suppose I was too harsh on their store because I do go there fairly often and mostly have no complaints. I know modern games from them like, say, 3DS games are basically equal to amazon, but I did see some - you'll have to take my word for it as I forgot the titles - non imported PS2 titles that were like at 39 dollars. As you said n64 is really high also. Overall decent place though.

Hardmoded PS1 can play burned games, that is less than 10 cents per game, you dont need the original games at all.

Sofmoded/Hardmoded PS2 is the same.

Meanwhile, SNES and NES games need a expensive cartridge to be able to play that cant be pirated that easy/for cheap.

The retro-gaming market bubble is going to burst sooner or later.

The problem is that the market at this point is replicating the comic-book market back in the 90's and if it isn't careful, a lot of sellers are gonna suffer the same way many comic sellers did back then.

Retro-gaming, like with comics way back when, has turned into a market whose product values are increasingly becoming pure speculation. These so-called collectors will eventually be forced by circumstance to pawn these games they're collecting for far cheaper than they purchased them if not just give them or throw them away, we already starting to see this with the NES game market.

The problem with the retro-game market is that it is too full of trophy collectors. These faggots buy the games just to have them and put them on their shelf and stand in front of them in their youtube videos. As more of these people purchase the games and don't trade them in, the carts become scarcer and it becomes harder for those who would get them game to actually play it to get it. Luckily for the actual retro-"gamers" though, without easy access to the original cartridges they pursue other methods of acquiring the game for the purpose of playing it, bypassing shelf-collectors and shekel-hungry retro-game sellers: flashcarts, emulators, virtual console services, cartridge repros, etc. By the time the shelf-collectors & sellers are ready to let go of these items, they'll find there won't be much of a market for them. Eventually, they'll find that holding onto that copy of Detective Comics issue #1 that is too sensitive and precious to open was a waste as now everyone who wanted to actually read it but couldn't without getting an original copy from those collectors can read it now. The guy who bought 3 Earthbound carts for 800 dollars may find suddenly when he is forced by debt or home expenses to sell them may find he has to sell them for extremely less when the market finally crashes.
