The devs did mention that they've been trying to make the campaign more like the multiplayer (big open maps). Maybe each mission is like it's own sandbox map for it's theater of war with multiple battles and objectives so you can get at least a couple of hours out of each.

No it was a really shallow, safe attempt at making controversy. Since this game's main audience is America it becomes obvious when you look at it. It's in a Russian airport not an American one, it's being led by a guy who is an iredeemable villa with no positive traits(and also russian), and you play as a person who's only part is to be an undercover American spy whose attempting to stop him. You don't even have to shoot once the whole mission until you are being fired on first when in reality of they really wanted to be edgy you would have had to or Makarov would have caught on and you would have failed. DICE says weapons will be customizable in BF1, but the customization options in BF4 were ridiculous. Will BF1 be able to keep at BF4's level of weapons customization, while being historically accurate? My guess is BF1 will take the fact that DIY weapon modding was common in WW1 and use it to justify a bunch of less-than-historically-accurate improvised weapon modifications. I'd be alright with that.

If they're bothering to waste time and money to tack on a single player campaign, that's DIRECTLY taking away time and money that could be spent honing and refining the multiplayer aspect. It's called the zero sum game.
